DAHLGREN, Va. - Naval Education and Training Command's (NETC) Chief Operating Officer (COO) visited the Center for Surface Combat Systems (CSCS) and Aegis Training and Readiness Center (ATRC) onboard Naval Support Facility Dahlgren Nov 2. Rear Adm. Clifford Sharpe assumed duties as COO in late October and is currently touring CSCS and ATRC and other commands in the area that report to NETC. Sharpe oversees the operation of learning centers and training support centers within the training domain with a continual focus on production management. CSCS Commanding Officer Capt. Bob Kerno and ATRC's Executive Officer Cmdr. Kip Rossetti hosted Sharpe during the orientation tour. "It was a great honor to have our new NETC Chief Operating Officer at CSCS," Kerno said. "He was able to reconnect with his Aegis roots by touring the labs and classrooms at ATRC and gain a better sense of CSCS's mission and the broad range of global training we provide at our 14 learning sites." During his visit, Sharpe was briefed about CSCS and ARTC's organization and training that prepare Sailors for the fleet. "Rear Adm. Sharpe demonstrated a great understanding of the complexities of training enlisted technicians and officers on eight Aegis baselines and the ships self defense system," said Rossetti. "This visit was important to highlight our priorities and challenges as we strive to deliver timely, effective, and integrated training across the Sailor's entire career." CSCS and its 14 learning sites, units and detachments, including ATRC, train Sailors across the full range of warfare capability: maintenance, operation, and employment skills. "I thoroughly enjoyed seeing first-hand the blended learning solution applied in instructor-led classrooms, Interactive Courseware, and hands on simulators that our Sailors receive," said Sharpe. "Our fleet achieves operational excellence daily because our Sailors are highly trained to maintain, operate, and employ the Aegis Combat System. Learning centers such as ATRC enable our fleet to successfully execute the NETC mission; to develop the workforce through education and training that builds personal, professional and leadership skills. CSCS and ATRC are doing a fantastic job supporting the maritime strategy and enabling the Navy to meet the mission." CSCS is responsible for the training of nine enlisted ratings: Fire Controlman (FC), Electronic Technician (ET), Interior Communications Electrician (IC), Sonar Technician Surface (STG), Gunner's Mate (GM), Mineman (MN), Operations Specialist (OS), Boatswain's Mate (BM) and Quartermaster (QM). CSCS also trains officers in system-specific skills required to tactically operate and employ surface ships, as well as provide specific training to many of our international partners.
