Solve the daily clues in The Great Pumpkin Hunt

This year, Linus won’t be the only one anticipating the Great Pumpkin as NAS Patuxent River personnel and their families are invited to participate in The Great Pumpkin Hunt, hosted by MWR’s Community Recreation department.

Beginning Oct. 1 and running weekdays through Oct. 29, one pumpkin will be hidden each day and participants will have until 5 p.m. to discover its location.

“At 9 a.m. every day, a clue will be posted on the MWR Facebook page [facebook.com/mwrpaxriver],” explained Jen Beavers, Pax River’s Community Recreation director. “Whoever finds the pumpkin first will need to take a selfie with the pumpkin at the location where they found it and then bring the pumpkin and their selfie to our Community Rec Office [formerly the Tickets and Travel office] by 5 p.m. that same day to claim their prize. There’s only one winner per day and once the pumpkin has been found, we’ll update our Facebook page to let others know.”

The daily prize is a bucket of candy with a final $25 Amazon gift card going to the individual who finds the most hidden pumpkins throughout the month.

The idea for the contest came from a leprechaun that’s hidden by the Liberty Center each March leading up to St. Patrick’s Day, an event that has become popular with the Single Sailor Program.

“I wanted to bring the same type of program to our Community Rec Department where all base personnel and their families could participate,” Beavers said. “It’s also a way for our customers to participate in an MWR program while still maintaining physical distance during COVID-19. Community Rec is excited to bring back programming, and we have more events planned throughout the upcoming holiday season.”
