Personnel from across NAS Patuxent River took advantage of the opportunity to learn about moving more, eating better and stressing less at the Health and Wellness Expo held May 2 at the Drill Hall.
The expo, a joint sponsored event by NAWCAD and MWR, featured multiple areas of health-related topics, including reasonable accommodations and ergonomics, stress management, financial wellness, and other personal and professional development opportunities.
“NAWCAD teamed up with MWR to host the event as part of the Quality of Worklife Programs,” explained Karen Brandon, NAWCAD human resources specialist, who handles those programs at Pax River. “When the opportunity arose to collaborate, we wanted to encompass the many facets of employee health – including physical, emotion, and financial – as well as the professional and personal development that is also important to the holistic health of employees.”
More than 20 exhibitors were on hand and included the Energy Zone, MWR Aquatics, Community Recreation, the Department of Aging & Human Services, and community health-related business such as chiropractors and nutrition stores. Representatives were also available from St. Mary’s Health Department, MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital, National Association for Retired Federal Employees, and class instructors from Career Development Division for Financial Wellness and Stress Management courses.
“NAWCAD was also represented at the event by our Pax River Equal Employee Opportunity Office (EEO), Career Development Division (CDD), and our Civilian Employee Assistance Program (CEAP),” Brandon added.
Attendees took advantage of giveaways, blood pressure checks, heart and health screenings, stress management techniques, financial wellness, massage, live group class demonstrations, and more.
MWR has held their yearly event at the Drill Hall for the past eight years. The members of the NAWCAD working group who teamed up with MWR Fitness Coordinator Mike Lorentzen for this year’s collaborative effort, along with Brandon, were Conita Craft, Wanda Cricchi, Giovanna Ferrazano, Joneice Butler and Jeannie Monico.
