Midn. 2⁄C Anthony J. Valliere, age 21, passed away Jan. 26 from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. A native of Palatine, Ill., Valliere was a mechanical engineering major assigned to 25th Company.

Sailors from the forward-deployed amphibious ship USS Essex (LHD 2) and the pilots and aircrew of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 25 rescued a merchant sailor who was suffering from stroke-like symptoms while onboard a Military Sealift Command ship in the Sea of Japan, Jan. 25.
With the continuing need for Sailors to serve Individual Augmentee (IA) and war on terrorism support assignments, the Navy recognizes the importance of rewarding these Sailors for their heroism. One of the rewards for these Sailors is meritorious advancement.
As of Jan. 18, USS Boxer (LHD 4) has sent 14 Sailors around the world to fill individual augmentee (IA) assignments since returning from its Western Pacific deployment.
U.S. Marine Corps Major Amy McGrath, Class of 1997, is one of twelve women whose stories appear in the book Band of Sisters, by author Kirsten Holmstedt. Ranked #9 in the latest American Collegiate Hockey Association poll, West Chester fell to 20-6-2 overall. The win marked Navy’s first triumph over West Chester since a thrilling overtime victory in the 2005 playoffs.
Navy men’s track & field runners Paul Harris and Andrew Hanko each posted a victory in the second and final day of the Penn State National Open Jan. 26. The Midshipmen totaled three event titles this weekend, as the distance medley relay team paced the competition last night.
An NC State forfeit in the final bout of the night, the 174-pound weight class, proved to be the deciding factor as the Navy wrestling team scored a 21-15 victory over the Wolfpack Jan. 26 at Halsey Field House in Annapolis.
