Holiday carols heard around base housing

Teens from the Youth Center will go Christmas caroling in Bolling AFB base housing Friday evening. The kids (13 and older) will gather in the Teen Room at 6 p.m., pick up their music sheets, and join adult escorts at the Youth Center. Cora Wharton, a Youth Center night supervisor, coordinated the sign-up for this event. Wharton explained that there is no set route that the teens will follow.

“They simply go into base housing and start singing carols,“ she said.

Wharton expects a good turnout this year. She remarked that all the children are excited about it, but many don't sign up because they may go out of town during that time. However, base caroling tends to have a snowball effect, she noted. Typically, about five or six kids initially sign up, but they pick up more kids (and adults, too) along the way, so by the time the carolers have made their way through base housing, there might be as many as 16 carolers.

The music sheets have the words for about six Christmas carols, but carolers select their favorites (usually a top three) and sing them again and again as they make their rounds. The teen carolers have so much fun that they often stay out caroling longer than the allotted one hour. Wharton said that “they can stay out as long as the Youth Center remains open.“ She added that when they are done caroling, they will return to the Youth Center to rest and enjoy hot cocoa.

Although the Youth Center signs up kids who are at least 13 years old, everyone is welcome to join the caroling. For more information about caroling in Bolling housing, call the Youth Center, 202-767-4003.
