Midn. 1⁄C Michael J. Campbell, of 10th Company, has been awarded a Marshall Scholarship, a highly competitive academic scholarship that provides two years of postgraduate study at a United Kingdom university.

Campbell will pursue a Master of Arts in Conflict, Security and Development at King’s College London. Campbell, from Chatam, N.J., majors in honors economics and ranks first in his class of 1,042. He served as the Academic Director for the Naval Academy Foreign Affairs Conference on Global Poverty and is an active volunteer in the Midshipman Action Group. A goalie on the varsity lacrosse team for three seasons, Campbell is currently the undergraduate assistant coach for the team goalies. Upon graduation, Campbell plans to become a SEAL in the U.S. Navy.

‘‘We are thrilled that Midshipman Campbell has been recognized with this scholarship. The Naval Academy experience is a most demanding one, and the academic program is a cornerstone of that experience,” said Dr. Andrew Phillips, Naval Academy academic dean and provost. ‘‘Midshipman Campbell has demonstrated an exceptional array of accomplishments, and we could not be more proud of him. This is a recognition very well deserved.”

Marshall Scholarships were founded by an Act of Parliament in 1953 and commemorate the humane ideals of the European Recovery Program (Marshall Plan). Goals of the program include enabling future leaders of America the opportunity to study in the U.K., to help scholars gain an understanding and app-reciation of contemporary Britain, to contribute to the advancement of knowledge at Britain’s centers of academic excellence and to motivate scholars to act as ambassadors throughout their lives thus strengthening British-American understanding. Approximately 40 Marshall Scholars are selected each year.
