Best bet: display auto decal

The Air Force discontinued use of windshield decals as an authorization for vehicles entering its bases, citing redundancy and manufacturing costs. Government-issued identification cards are checked at entrances to Air Force facilities.

Army and Navy installations continue to require use of DoD decals, along with the military ID cards for easy gate access. This has created frustration among Air Force members living in areas hosting multiple military installations such as Washington, Norfolk or San Antonio. The simple solution is to obtain a DoD decal by registering vehicles at Army or Navy installations. Bolling AFB and Joint Base Andrews have continued to provide decals on request.

Joint Basing at both installations adds a new wrinkle. Andrews is the lead service with Navy. At Bolling, Navy will have the lead, come Oct. 1, and decals will be required. They are issued at the Joint Visitor Center at the South Gate. Bring your driver’s license, record of current insurance and vehicle registration. For information, call 202-767-5505.

Congress salutes first academy graduates

Members of the U.S. House of Representatives honored the Air Force Academy’s first graduating class. Rep. Doug Lamborn of Colorado introduced the resolution on their 50th graduation anniversary.

Representative Lamborn noted that 306 men entered the academy in 1955 at its interim site, Lowry Air Force Base near Denver.

On June 3, 1959, 207 cadets graduated. Retired Lt. Gen. Bradley Hosmer, the top graduate, went on to Oxford University, the first of 35 Academy Rhodes Scholars.

The Class of ’59 created lasting traditions and set high standards for the 41,000 cadets who have followed in their steps, the congressman said. ‘‘I look forward to another half-century of extraordinary achievements from our cadets.”
