Death notices

Anyone with debts owed to or by the estate of Pfc. Cody Eggleston must contact Lt. Col. Hiram Lopez, the summary court officer for the Soldier. Eggleston recently passed away on Oct. 24 at Bethesda Medical Center as a result of wounds suffered in Iraq. Call Lopez at(703) 692-8190.

Anyone with debts owed to or by the estate of Col. Sidney J. Marceaux Jr. must contact Capt. Scott Miller, the summary court officer for the Soldier. Marceaux passed away on Sept. 14. Call Miller at (540) 841-1396 or e-mail at scott.d.miller@us.army.mil.

Force protection exercise

FMMC and the Arlington County Public Health Dept. will deliver and dispense ‘‘medication” from the national stockpile in response to a biochemical release in the NCR as part of an exercise in chemical response on Saturday, Nov. 8, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Fort Myer Community Center (Bldg. 405).

Thrift Shop Saturday Sale

The Fort Myer Thrift Shop will be having a Saturday Sale on Nov. 15. The Thrift Shop will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information, visit www.fortmyerthriftshop.org.

TOG Museum to relocate

Due to upcoming renovation of Bldg. 249, the Old Guard Museum has been temporarily closed. It will be moving to its new location in Conmy Hall.

The new museum exhibits will be unveiled in Spring of 2009. The Old Guard Ladies Association Store will also move to the lobby of Conmy Hall and re-open in November.

FAST raises GT score

Interested in raising your GT score to change your MOS or attend an NCO Education System course? If so, FAST (Functional Academic Skills Training) is the way to go.

Instruction is based on an individual’s deficient subject areas reflected by TABE score results.

ACS Book Club

ACS Family Advocacy Program is beginning a new book club which is open to all service members, retirees, family members and DoD civilians (priority will be given to Fort Myer assigned ID card holders).

The book for November will be ‘‘The Five Love Languages of Children” by Gary Chapman. Book distribution will be Nov. 3 to Nov. 7 at the FMMC Family Advocacy Office, Bldg. 201.

Participants must register in person at Bldg. 201 during the first week of the month. The first 10 registrants will receive the book free.

Just let us know you’ll be attending. Book topics will vary from month to month. Read the book before the discussion group date and join the group to gain further insight.

The discussion group will take place on Nov. 24 from 9:30 to 11:30 p.m. at the Spates Community Club, Fort Myer. For more information call(703) 696-3512.

ACS Adopt-a-Family

ACS is seeking individuals and organizations to adopt military families for the holidays.

Soldiers and families in this program will receive specific gift donations to include food for their children from agencies and individuals alike (gift certificates may be used for food items).

Once you have volunteered to become a donor, an ACS Adopt-A-Family representative will provide you with the children’s’ ‘‘wish list” and other details.

The deadline for gifts to be turned in to ACS is Friday, Dec. 14.

Buses to Walter Reed

Metro Bus transportation is available from the Takoma Park Metro Station to Walter Reed Army Medical Center Monday through Friday.

To ride, get a bus transfer before leaving the station and take the K-1 or K-2 bus during rush hour. During non-rush hours, take the 52 or 54 bus. Bus fares require exact change.

There is also a shuttle bus that runs from Fort Belvoir to Walter Reed. This bus is available to personnel who hold a Department of Defense ID card.

The bus departs from DeWitt Army Medical Center at 8:15 a.m., departs Fort Myer’s Rader Clinic at 9 a.m. and arrives at Walter Reed at10 a.m. The next departure from DeWitt is 11:55 a.m. Fort Myer at 12:15 p.m., arriving at Walter Reed at 1:15 p.m.

SHAPE Officers Association

If you’re an active duty or retired officer or civilian equivalent and served at SHAPE, its subordinate commands or NATO, you are invited to join the SHAPE Officers Association.

The U.S. Chapter of SOA holds frequent luncheons and hosts guest speakers in the D.C. area as well as golf trips and an annual formal dinner.

The PRAXIS series of tests for prospective teachers will be offered for military personnel at the Fort Myer Education Center Testing Office on Jan. 12, 2009. November MOAA Luncheon

The Northern Virginia Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America will host its monthly meeting and luncheon on Wednesday, Nov. 19 at the Vinson Hall Retirement Community in McLean, VA.

Founded by the Navy Marine Coast Guard Residence Foundation, Vinson Hall is open to former military officers and immediate family members. CEO Admiral Kathy Martin will be on hand to share information about campus redevelopment and expansion.

The meeting and luncheon will be held at Arleigh Hall Pavilion of Vinson Hall at 11:30 a.m. Active duty officers, retirees, and spouses are invited.

Pentagon Ski Club Meeting

The November meeting will be on Tuesday, November 18, 7pm at the Fort Myer O'Club.

The evening will feature an interactive conditioning session with Vince Janowicz, a Certified Personal Trainer and member of the National Strength Coaches Association. Vince has trained novice through expert skiers including a number of younger skiers involved in racing.

Volunteers will perform some of the activities with a jump rope, a BOSU balance trainer, or weight bands. Handouts will include an assessment guide, isolation exercises, integrated exercises, strength and power exercises.

We'll munch on carved whole turkey with sage stuffing & gravy and green beans almondine followed by a fruit tray and chocolate fondue.

New members are welcome. See Luella Montgomery at the sign-in desk. She's the PSC Welcome Committee chairperson and will get you acquainted with the club.

Single Parent Support Group Meeting

Parenting can be a stressful situation for any parent, even more so for single parents.

If you are feeling stressed and overwhelmed or would just like to meet other single parents and share your experiences, you are invited to join our Single Parent Support Group.

The next meeting will be on Nov. 13 from11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Joint Military Assistance Center (JMAC) at the Pentagon, Room 2D173.

The topic of discussion will be surviving the holiday blues. The group is open to all service members, retirees, DoD civilians and their families.

MOAA Scholarships

More than 1,600 students will receive up to $5,000 each in interest-free loans from the Military Officers Association of America’s Scholarship Fund for the 2008-2009 school year.

Students can apply at MOAA’s Web site for the loans, which are awarded annually for up to five years of undergraduate study.

Students under age 24, who are children of former, active or retired officers or active or retired enlisted military personnel, are eligible to apply.

The MOAA Scholarship Fund has given nearly 10,000 students interest-free loans totaling more than $71.2million since its inception in 1948.
