In general, the commanderís civilian Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) program objectives are to ensure that all civilian employees and applicants for federal civilian employment enjoy equality of opportunity in the workplace regardless of race, sex, national origin, color, religion, disability or reprisal for engaging in prior protected EEO activity.

In order to accomplish these objectives, Walter Reed Army Medical Center EEO will partner with WRAMC mangers, supervisors and employees to focus on preventive processes to resolve EEO and workplace related matters at the earliest possible stage and provide more proactive and responsive services and products. These efforts, communication, education, mediation, disputes resolution and effective partnering at all levels of the workforce, will augment the Armyís commitment to a diverse and harmonious workforce.

Walter Reed EEOís proactive initiatives will meet the program objectives and mirror the essential elements of a Model EEO/Affirmative Employment Program as defined by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC).

Open and objective two-way communication is the foundation for any good employee/ employer work environment. Effective two-way communication acknowledges the value of its employeeís contributions and provides a foundation for respect.

Respect is the impetus for job satisfaction, which statistics show, contributes to a more productive workforce.

The goal of EEO is to provide our partners with the tools necessary to resolve potential disputes as early as possible. It is no longer efficient or cost effective to belatedly react to complaints and workplace problems. We must recognize, communicate and proactively work together to resolve potential problems or disputes before an employee decides to initiate the EEO administrative process. Further, we must help all employees succeed while maintaining a harmonious workplace.

Active listening is absolutely essential in the communication process. As a principle advisor to commanders, directors and managers on EEO matters, listening is the most basic advice we can impart. The EEO staff and our partners must actively listen and understand issues and concerns before prematurely reacting without all the facts and options available. Once we understand the basic principles of true communication and why active listening is so important, we are well on our way to an environment that demonstrates respect for self, others, and a productive workforce.

Respect, coupled with positive communication in the workplace, results in an experience that allows an organization to benefit from its employeesí broad range of talent and ideas. If you have any questions or comments relating to EEO, call the WRAMC EEO office.

Walter Reedís EEO office is located in the Old Hospital (Bldg 1), Rm. B-220. The office telephone number is (202) 782-3343. Office is open Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
