Warriors Courtney ‘‘Sheyenne” Warrington tackles Bobby Hamrick of the Wakefield Fighting Owls. Hamrick’s hat-trick in a five-minute span set the tone for the Fighting Owls’ dominating win against the Warriors on Sept. 26.
The Warriors took a beating in Friday’s 11-0 loss to Wakefield Middle School.
They were outplayed by the Fighting Owls, who made more than 20 attempts at goal throughout the game, compared to none for Quantico Middle School. Quantico’s goalie, Ryan Gates, was tested almost as soon as the opening whistle started the game and the team remained pressured for the entire game.
Bobby Hamrick set the Fighting Owls’ offense rolling with a hat-trick in five minutes.
‘‘He’s our best player,” Fighting Owls coach John Wood said of his star. ‘‘Wonderful, skilled at both feet, makes good decisions and a very unselfish player.”
By halftime the Fighting Owls had built a 6-0 lead that already seemed impossible for the Warriors to overcome.
‘‘I really emphasized good sportsmanship,” Wood said he told his team at halftime. ‘‘We were way ahead and I didn’t want any gloating or bad sportsmanship or that kind of thing.”
Warriors coach Paul Moreno tried to uplift his team in his halftime speech, but the Warriors continued to give up the ball to its opponent. Just two minutes into the game, the Fighting Owls struck again, showing no intention of slowing down.
If there was one negative for the Fighting Owls it was in its inability to convert on two penalty kicks, to the disdain of Wood. But otherwise, Wood said he was happy with his team’s improvements.
‘‘I didn’t anticipate this being an easy game for us. Last year we lost to this team and it was the only game we lost,” Wood said. ‘‘So I didn’t come in here thinking we were going to win by that kind of margin. If I had known ... I would’ve talked to them about what we might do if we go way ahead.”
‘‘We would like to have some wins in the win column,” Jill Moreno, who also coaches the team, said on the Warrior’s goal for the rest of the season. ‘‘And we would like the kids to have some more experience under their belt.”
Saturday’s match was canceled due to weather, but the Warriors will try to win its match against Seton School at home today. The match begins at 4 p.m.
