Even surrounded by the eccentric characters and events of New York’s hipster nightlife, Norah (Kat Dennings) and Nick (Michael Cera) manage to keep the audience focused on their budding romance in ‘‘Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist.”
Chemistry makes or breaks a love story. The back-and-forth push kept Harry and Sally interesting; Alvy Singer’s quirky vulnerability made us cringe when Annie Hall finally left him.
In ‘‘Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist,” the draw of similarly from-the-fringe music taste and the connection that seems to grow from a shared love of mixed CDs keeps all eyes on the film’s protagonists.
Michael Cera (‘‘Superbad,” ‘‘Juno”) brings his now-signature adorably awkward demeanor to the screen as Nick, the straight bass player in a gay punk band.
Kat Dennings (‘‘The 40-Year-Old Virgin”) plays Norah, who gets into exclusive Manhattan clubs a little too easy to just be some girl from New Jersey — don’t worry, no spoilers here!
Norah has a crush on her friend Tris’s ex, who she’s never met, because he makes her such great mix CDs. She can’t believe Tris would cheat on a guy like this ‘‘Nick” she’s been dating.
Nick has taken a ‘‘personal day” from school to sit around in his underwear and express his feelings via iTunes before heading to the city to play a show with his band.
When Norah bumps into Nick and asks him to ‘‘be her boyfriend for five minutes” and kisses him so she doesn’t look bad in front of the very competitive Tris (and her new boy), their quest to find Fluffy together begins.
Oh, and she realizes she just kissed THE Nick whose mixes she’s fallen in love with ... in front of his ex-girlfriend.
What follows is a whirlwind of trendy rock’n’roll hot spots, all-male revues and bus stations that strikes a well-tuned balance between recent blockbuster teen gross-out comedies like ‘‘Superbad” and more romantic comedies like ‘‘Juno” (which, in retrospect, both feature Cera in leading roles ... the kid is hot right now!).
Both characters have intertwining subplots — Nick’s ex is Norah’s arch-nemesis, Norah’s on-and-off ex is a conniving hipster trying to use Norah as a stepping stone to fame (see the aforementioned spoiler mention).
All the while, Norah’s friend Caroline (played expertly by relative unknown Ari Graynor) has gotten too drunk and run away to find her way back to New Jersey. Her exploits keep the audience (and her co-stars) on their toes.
Between bungled phone calls, the excitable, bubbly drunk girl and an ever-present piece of gum that manages to stay (mostly) in someone’s mouth throughout the night, it’s putting it simply to say hilarity ensues.
