Academy Business Services Introduces Yard Card

Is carrying cash in your pocket just temptation to spend it? Leave the cash in the bank. The Naval Academy Business Services unveiled the Yard Card on Sept. 11.

The Yard Card is similar to Navy Cash cards used aboard ships, in which Sailors set up accounts through their ship’s disbursing office, and then deposit money into that account via allotment. Like the Navy Cash cards, the Yard Card is secure, there is nothing to sign, and it is safer than using cash because it can be replaced if lost or stolen.

Midshipmen, faculty and staff all qualify for the Yard Card, which can be used at Drydock Restaurant, Steerage Restaurant, Nimitz Library Coffee Bar, Hart Room Coffee Bar, Mitscher⁄Levy Coffee Mess and the Officer’s Club. The card cannot be used at the NEX, commissary, or sporting events; however, Naval Academy Business Services plans to extend its use to the Midshipmen Store in the future.

In addition to the convenience and security of the Yard Card, users will also be eligible to win free food and beverages either instantly or by playing the built-in games on the card, made possible by the card’s thermal magnetic material.

The card’s appearance will also change periodically to highlight current events such as football games.

One of the greatest benefits of the cards, according to Lt. j.g. Karlie McClelland, Naval Academy Business Services, is that parents can place money on their Midshipmen’s Yard Card account. Unlike a regular ATM or credit card, the Yard Card can only be used on Academy grounds, so all proceeds go directly back to the Brigade.

Anyone interested in receiving a Yard Card can call the Drydock Office at 410-293-2434, or simply stop by during normal business hours. A minimum starting balance of $25 is required and users can deposit money on their cards by visiting the Drydock office or by calling in over the phone and using a credit card.
