Maj. Gen. Richard J. Rowe Jr., commanding general, Joint Force Headquarters-National Capital Region and Military District of Washington, tees off on the fifth hole.
On a perfect Friday morning, service members from all over the National Capital Region gathered on the south golf course at Andrews Air Force Base to do what they do best. At least, those were the boasts at the driving range before the event began.

Andrews Air Force Base hosted the Joint Force Headquarters-National Capital Region Commander’s Cup, and the result was a day spent in friendly competition between military branches and commanders. The tournament was played in ‘‘Texas Scramble” style, which means that each team starts on a separate hole, and they work their way around. It was also a best-ball tournament, which meant that the team captain picked the best shot from their team, and the remaining team members shoot from that spot.

Fort Myer fielded three teams, consisting of various Army and civilian personnel. The team featuring Col. Laura J. Richardson, garrison commander, Pete McGraw, geographic information systems, Dee Spellman of the Executive Housing Management Directorate and Kevin Boyd of the Directorate of Information Management placed second out of 19 teams.

‘‘It was very surprising, we didn’t know where we stood until they announced it,” Spellman said. ‘‘I had great teammates. Col. Richardson had some great drives and Pete and Kevin had some good hits too. I had one good putt, but they carried us.”

Before the event began Maj. Gen. Richard J. Rowe Jr., commanding general, Joint Force Headquarters-National Capital Region and Military District of Washington, thanked the service members for participating.

‘‘Thank you for coming out and taking a break from the great work you do,” Rowe said.

‘‘Although, with all the military personnel here, it can hardly be called a day off,” he said.

In addition to the aforementioned team, the Fort Myer Department of Emergency Services fielded a team featuring the fire chief, police chief, provost sergeant and chief of detectives.
