The VA offers a wide range of health care, education, life insurance, home loan guaranty, disability compensation, vocational rehabilitation and employment benefits and programs. The VA Benefits Briefing explains these benefits, outlines eligibility criteria, answers questions and provides instructions for completing and filing applications.

Centennial of Military Aviation
The Centennial of Military Aviation at Fort Myer will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6. This celebration is free and open to the public.
The event is a day-long open house celebrating the 100 year anniversary when the U.S. Army entered into an agreement with the Wright Brothers to test their flyer at Fort Myer in 1908.
Opening ceremonies are at 10 a.m. on Summerall Field and will include an aerial flyover.
The centerpiece of the celebration will be a reproduction of the 1908 Wright Flyer.
Other attractions include historic demonstrations, service aviation displays, musical performances and family activities.
There will be no parking on Fort Myer, but event parking will be available at the Pentagon North parking lot, accessed off of Washington Boulevard and Boundary Channel Drive.
From there, buses will transport attendees to and from Fort Myer. Shuttle Service will also be available from Fort Myer’s Wright Gate, at North Meade Street and Marshall Drive, for walk-in traffic from Rosslyn.

Open House closures
Fort Myer’s Commissary, PX, Fitness Center, Military Clothing Sales and Autocrafts Shop will be closed Saturday, Sept. 6 to accommodate the Centennial of Military Aviation Open House.
The Fort Myer Commissary will open one hour early at 8 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 7.
Additionally, the Old Post Chapel Gate leading to Arlington National Cemetery will be closed. The cemetery can still be accessed through the main Memorial Drive entrance.

9⁄11 remembrance
On Sept. 11, the FMMC Memorial Chapel sanctuary will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. for anyone wishing to spend time in prayer or meditation in remembrance of the events of Sept. 11, 2001.
The regularly scheduled 11:50 a.m. Catholic Mass will take place in the Blessed Sacrament at Memorial Chapel that day. No other worship services will take place at FMMC.
Commanders training course
The JFHQ-NCR⁄MDW Commanders’ and First Sergeants’ Training Course dates are Sept. 29 through Oct. 1. The course will be held at the Fort Myer Chapel, across from the Post Exchange.
The course is designed to acquaint new and prospective company leaders with some of the challenges of command and with the resources available to them as a company commander in the National Capital Region. MDW regulation requires all JFHQ-NCR⁄MDW company commanders and first sergeants to attend this training.

Prostate cancer screening
In support of September’s Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, Walter Reed’s Urology Clinic and Department of Defense Center for Prostate Disease Research will conduct their annual prostate cancer screening for military health care beneficiaries on Saturday, Sept. 20, from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m.
The screening will take place at the Center for Prostate Disease Research on Ward 56 (5th floor). Appointments are required. Please call (202) 782-4000 for an appointment or for more information.
Screening appointments are also available during normal duty hours at the Prostate Center and Urology Clinic, (202) 782-6406. A referral from a primary provider is not required. For men diagnosed with prostate cancer, treatment and care are available at Walter Reed through the Urology Clinic and Center for Prostate Disease Research.
Parenting for step families
Army Community Service Family Advocacy Program is offering this free six-week series for parents and stepparents focusing on the complexities of stepfamily living. Topics covered will include blending family histories, traditions and values; coping with loss and encouraging healthy grieving; establishing parental authority utilizing positive discipline techniques, improving communication and much more.
Classes will be held Tuesdays from August 26th through September 30th from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the ACS Classroom, Bldg 201. Classes require pre-registration.

Pentagon Ski Club
The Pentagon Ski Club meets the second Tuesday of each month at the Fort Myer's Officer's Club in the Abrams Chaffee room at 7 p.m. The first meeting of the season is Tuesday, Sept. 9.
Government affiliation is not required for club membership. The club runs week long trips to Europe, Canada, and the western U.S.
The Sept. 9 meeting will feature sign-ups for this season’s ski trips (bring your checkbooks!) and a presentation on trip insurance issues.
We'll munch on roasted beef tenderloin, a tortellini pasta bar, tri-colored pepper bruschetta and assorted mini pastries.

Green to Gold briefing
If you’re a quality enlisted Soldier with officer potential and have served at least two years on active duty, then you are allowed to voluntarily participate and enroll in Army ROTC through the Green to Gold program.

Interested in raising your GT score to change your MOS or attend an NCO Education System course? If so, FAST (Functional Academic Skills Training) is the way to go. Instruction is based on an individual’s deficient subject areas reflected by TABE score results.

SHAPE Officers Association
If you’re an active duty or retired officer or civilian equivalent and served at SHAPE, its subordinate commands or NATO, you are invited to join the SHAPE Officers Association (SOA).
The U.S. Chapter of SOA holds frequent luncheons and hosts guest speakers in the D.C. area as well as golf trips and an annual formal dinner.

Buses to Walter Reed
Metro Bus transportation is available from the Takoma Park Metro Station to Walter Reed Army Medical Center Monday through Friday.
To ride, get a bus transfer before leaving the station and take the K-1 or K-2 bus during rush hour. During non-rush hours, take the 52 or 54 bus. Bus fares require exact change.
There is also a shuttle bus that runs from Fort Belvoir to Walter Reed Army Medical Center. This bus is available to personnel who hold a Department of Defense ID card.
The bus departs from DeWitt Army Medical Center at 8:15 a.m., departs Fort Myer’s Rader Clinic at 9 a.m. and arrives at Walter Reed at 10 a.m. The next departure from DeWitt is 11:55 a.m. Fort Myer at 12:15 p.m., arriving at Walter Reed at 1:15 p.m.

Andrew Rader U.S. Army Health Clinic Behavioral Health Services is offering a Women’s Mid-Life Transition Group for women who are ages 45 to 70.
This will be a semi-structured group that focuses on adapting to the changes in health, career⁄lifestyle, finance and relationships that are inherent in this life stage.

Bench Press Championships
The Fort Myer Fitness Center is partnering with the AAU to sponsor a bench press competition that is open to military only on September 20 and 21.

Registration is $10, general admission for the crowd is free. Prizes and medals will be distributed for our top individuals and teams.
