Independence Day is our opportunity to celebrate America’s hard fought freedom. It is a time to reflect on how far the nation has come and how far it must go to ensure democracy is maintained.

This legacy of self-government is borne by many to include the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines and Coast Guards on duty around the globe. It is to these men and women in uniform that a deserving tribute is paid, for they epitomize the spirit of independence we as a country cherish so greatly.

A standing tradition commemorating the holiday is the use of fireworks. Fireworks should be used only with extreme caution. Older children should be closely supervised, and younger children should not be allowed to play with fireworks, including sparklers. Also, before using fireworks, make sure they are permitted in your state or local area.

We are at the half-way point of the 101 Critical Days of Summer, so it is important to not misplace our enthusiasm and forget the risks that are associated with the fun.

The Fourth of July is a great time to enjoy time with friends and family, whether boating, fishing or lighting up the grill in the backyard.

Enjoy your family and friends over a restful holiday, but come home safely to your Walter Reed family. Enjoy your celebration and make memories that will be cherished for a long lifetime.
