Name: Sgt. 1st Class Billy Yarborough
Title: Fort McNair Dining Facility Manager

Q: How long have you been in your position?

A: Four months

Q: Describe your job.

A: I support the Fort Myer Military Community and the Military District of Washington and the personnel for Twilight Tattoo ... and other special requests [for food service]. I oversee and check the status of the Soldiers, find out what’s going on, see what [supplies] we need to order, determine what events are coming up. We support the Soldier of the Year competition, personnel going to Fort A. P. Hill, etc.

Q: What do you like about your job?

A: I like that you get to serve a lot of folks. I like seeing people satisfied after they’ve completed a meal, having them smile and say, ‘‘Great job.”

Q: What did you do before coming to FMMC?

A: I was platoon sergeant for 92 Sierra down at Fort Lee, Va.

Q: How long have you been in the Army?

A: Twenty-one years.

Q: What does it mean to be a good noncommissioned officer?

A: Leading by example and doing those tasks that are required of you to let the Soldier see that you’re doing the same thing they have to do. It’s about being their inspiration.

Q: How do you develop leadership?

A: Be, know and do. Know what you’re doing and constantly set an example for your Soldiers.

Q: What did you do before joining the military?

A: I worked at different restaurants. I always wanted to do something that involved something people would always need. Food is one of them.

Q: Do you have a special dish you like to prepare?

A: Barbecue ribs. Pork. It’s the combination of sweet and tangy that makes good ribs.

Q: Where are you originally from?

A: Columbia, South Carolina.

Q: Where do you live now?

A: I live in Centreville, Va., with my wife and three children.

Q: What do you do for fun?

A: Ride my bike, run, work out ... and wash my cars. [For PT] I get together with my Soldiers and we run to the different monuments, check out the sights.
