Whether it’s classical, rock, or hip hop, good music can be the perfect addition to a beautiful summer day. For the United States Naval Academy Band, their free Summer City Dock Concert Series offers something for everyone.
The Naval Academy Band performs every Sunday evening at the City Dock in downtown Annapolis through August 19. The shows are free and open to the public, and start at 7:30 p.m.
''Part of the mission of any Navy band is community relations,'' said Senior Chief Musician Dan Drew, Band Operations Division Chief.
According to Drew, the perfor-mance of the band shows the public that talented Sailors are serving their country in many different capacities. The Naval Academy Band features 66 enlisted musicians and two officers, all lending their unique skills. Each member auditions individually, and if selected, reports to the Naval Academy for permanent duty.
There are three main ensembles performing at the City Dock. The Concert Band is a 50-piece ensemble featuring light classics as well as marches and performing with vocalists. Along with them is the ''Contemporary Entertainment Ensemble,'' or rock band, performing hip hop, rock, and modern pop music, and the ''Next Wave Jazz Ensemble,'' which performs traditional jazz music as well as big band and modern jazz.
The bands perform all genres of music, promising to appeal to listeners of any age. The free summer concert series are an ongoing tradition, entertaining the Academy for over 25 years.
