Greetings Fort Detrick community!

Summer is fast approaching and the month of May is always an exciting time for me. Our biggest events happen on post next week. We will kick-off the week with the Spring Research Festival May 14-15. The Festival will include a health and safety exposition, educational information, safety and scientific displays, and commercial exhibits of the latest scientific equipment and technologies.

We will continue the fun-filled festivities with our Armed Forces Day here at Nallin Farm Pond recreation area May 17.

Our events start with a 10 k military run at 7:30 a.m. and an SOS breakfast which starts at 9a.m. This year, we have new and exciting community exhibits and displays which start at 10:30 a.m. There will be military displays and vehicles, an Inflatable moon bounce, games, a rock climbing wall, In Ji Yong martial arts demonstrations, weight lifting demonstrations, a DJ, concession stands and more!

New to the scene will be the American Hero Airshow from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Military and emergency responders across Maryland will showcase their helicopters and the pilots will meet and greet guests.

Expect to see a laser light show, military vehicles, along with For our entertainment, the Poor Mary Classic Rock Band which starts at 12:30 p.m. We will have the U.S. Navy Cruisers which starts at 7:45 p.m. Our open mike talent show contest starts at 5 p.m. Our celebration will end with an elaborate fireworks display at Nallin Farm pond.

This Armed Forces Day will be an event you won’t forget. I look forward to seeing you there. For more information, call (301) 619-2957⁄2018.

A little reminder, during the summer months, I expect everyone to take the proper safety precautions. Drink plenty of water, put on your sunscreen, and try to stay out of the heat for long periods of time. Be vigilant and take care.
