The finals of the 2008 USMC Intramural Bowling Championship was played April 30 at the bowling center aboard Quantico, and the Manpower and Reserve Affairs ‘‘Misfits” blazed through the competition to earn the championship.
After the 25-week regular season, eight teams competed in a single series elimination playoff, which consisted of the games rolled with the handicap added. The third-seeded Misfits defeated the sixth-ranked Weapons Training Battalion and upset the second-seeded Officer Candidates School en route to the final, where it met the eight-seeded Marine Corps Network Operations and Security Command ‘‘Nockers.”
The Nockers were enjoying a ‘‘Cinderella run” to the finals after upsetting the top-seeded Tenant Activity Company ‘‘Bell Ringers” in the first round, and the fourth-seeded Marine Corps Embassy Security Guard ‘‘Pin Pushers” in the semis.
Nockers team captain Dustin Gering said his team wasn’t expecting to make it into the playoffs since it tied for the eighth spot with two other teams. He said the team’s expectations were even less going into the playoffs, but it quickly changed after defeating the top seed.
‘‘After we took out the first-placed team, the team got hyped up,” Gering said. ‘‘But we tried to take it one game at a time, and not get too overconfident.”
Any confidence the Nockers had of upsetting another higher ranked seed to win the championship was trumped by the Misfits, who took no chances against the Cinderella team. Led by team captain Peace Gutierrez’s series high 666 points for his three-game set, the Misfits easily handled the Nockers 3,053 to 2,819.
‘‘If you mark, you win, so our strategy was just to try and get as many strikes as possible,” Gutierrez said. Gutierrez said as the higher seed in the finals, the Misfits expected to win despite the Nockers success against higher seeded teams, and its slight handicap lead against the Misfits, heading into the finals. Gutierrez said teammate Alvin Figueroa really helped the team in the last few games.
‘‘[Figueroa] really came out during the last few games,” Gutierrez said. ‘‘He improved a lot from when he first came in, and he went into the finals wanting to make a difference.”
Gutierrez was also gracious in his assessment of the Nockers saying the team played incredibly well and kept it close for most of the finals.
‘‘We were disappointed,” Gering said of his team’s loss. ‘‘We knew we could’ve won it, but things just didn’t work for us. Overall, we are satisfied with how the team played.”
Bowling intramurals coordinator Charles Gold commended the efforts of the bowling center’s staff throughout the season, as the center looks forward to a Handicap Pro Shot Singles League set to begin May 29. Gold said the next intramural season will begin Oct. 1.
