The Army Education Center in the Pentagon closed April 18. Its parent wedge became the latest part of the Pentagon to undergo renovation.
Soldiers looking for information on education opportunities only have to travel to Fort Myer’s Bldg. 219 on Forrest Circle for help. The Pentagon office will be closed for an indefinite period of time, according to Shelly Caywood.
The Pentagon office was always an extension of the Fort Myer Army Education Center, Caywood said.
‘‘We had an office there just for the Soldiers’ convenience,” she said. ‘‘We were a satellite site there and Soldiers from Crystal City and other sites in MDW would go there.”
The Army will have a counselor at the Air Force’s Pentagon Education Center Room 1A-934 on Tuesdays from 8 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. The move to Fort Myer should not inconvenience Soldiers too much.
‘‘We do most things through e-mail or by phone to save the Soldiers a trip,” Caywood said. ‘‘They are very welcome to come over here, but we’re happy to work through phone and e-mail.”
When Soldiers decide they want a college education the counselors at the education center will discuss the Soldiers’ goals, outline the tuition assistance available and describe some of the programs available.
Some schools give classes on post or Soldiers may have to go out to local college campuses. Many schools offer entire programs online, Caywood said.
The folks at the education center will even proctor online tests for students. They will also offer guidance to military family members.
Some Soldiers may be looking to improve their general skills in core subjects such as math, reading and writing. The FAST classes or Functional Academic Skills Training is for them. FAST is for Soldiers who want to improve their general technical (GT) scores.
The Fort Myer Education Center also operates the Multiuse Learning Environment (MLE), a computer lab, MOS library, Digital Training Facility and more in Bldg. 404, next to the dining facility. It is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Friday and Monday-Thursday from 5 to 9 p.m.
