Pax recognized for installation excellence

NAS Patuxent River has been named the third-place Navy winner in the 2008 Commander-in-Chief’s Installation Excellence Award. Naval Base Coronado, Calif., and Fleet Activities Sasebo, Japan, were the first and second-place Navy installations, respectively.

The three were selected from 11 nominated Navy installations, each of which was a winner in its own region. NAS Patuxent River represented Naval District Washington in the competition. A snapshot of Pax River’s accomplishments during the award period include:

  • Signed a Memorandum of Understanding with St. Mary’s County confirming the cooperation between Pax River and St. Mary's County for Encroachment Mitigation and Prevention;

  • Completed renovation of Visitor’s Quarters, with 74 guest suites remodeled and outfitted with new furniture, carpet, window treatments and bathrooms;

  • Began construction on two new housing areas for our military families;

  • Completed renovation of the gate 2 area which improved security and quality of service conditions for the gate guards;

  • Brought together FFSC, PSD, Medical and Legal to host a new Individual Augmentee Indoctrination Course, which has streamlined the deployment preparation process. Pax also hosts a spouse support group which brings together the families of IAs and holds a quarterly homecoming ceremony to recognize those recently returned from IA;

  • MWR’s before and after school program received its accreditation by the National AfterSchool Association;

  • Conducted environmental education center tours⁄lectures and community outreach programs to nearly 5,000 children and adults. Group participants included scouts and the St. Mary’s Audubon Society, as well as tenant commands and hunter safety education students; and

  • Awarded 2007 Community Service Program of the Year Award in the Personal Excellence Partnership Flagship.

    Established in 1984, the CINC Installation Excellence Award recognizes installations ‘‘whose command has made best use of available resources to accomplish its assigned mission, and has focused on innovative management actions that have enhanced work force productivity while improving the quality of life for its personnel,” according to the announcement by Vice Adm. Michael K. Loose.

    The award recognizes one installation from each branch of service and the Defense Logistics Agency. Other service winners were: Fort A.P. Hill, Va.; Camp Pendleton, Calif.; Dover Air Force Base, Del.; and Defense Supply Center Richmond, Va.
