Four avid golfers, all assigned to the Commander Navy Installation Command (CNIC) on the Washington Navy Yard, won the Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Annual Spring Scramble April 21 at the Whiskey Creek Golf Club in Ijamsville, Md.
The winning team consisted of Cmdr. Donald Naiser, Cmdr. Rick Nelson, Mark Sinder and Mike Kirby, said Jennifer R. Miller, MWR sports director. The team’s scorecard totaled 55, a whopping 17 under par on the par 72 course.
Miller said the tournament scoring started at a fast pace with nine under par leading at the turn to the back nine holes of play. Midway through the final nine, three teams were tied under at 14-under and remained tied until the final hole.
IN addition to the CNIC team, those at -14 included one made up of Cmdr. A. Whitescarver and Lt. Cmdr. Brian Tanaka from the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program Office, Kevin King from Northrop Grumman and retired Capt. Mike Myers. Civilian employees Scott Gray, Adam Shiffer, Rich Peck and Michael Bradshaw comprised the third team.
The tournament had 116 participants, who were paired up on 29 four-man teams, said Miller.
‘‘The noon shotgun start was threatened by a driving rainstorm that was sitting over most of Maryland but the course was playable,” she said. ‘‘All players were eager to compete.”
The tournament also featured the longest drive contests for women and men. The winners there were Phyllis David from the Defense Information Systems Agency and Christopher Powers from the United States Navy Ceremonial Guard.
