Major league baseball hall of famer Brooks Robinson and representatives from the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs baseball team will visit here April 7 in VX-1 Hangar 305 from 12 - 12:45 p.m. Robinson, owner of the Blue Crabs, will speak about the franchise and the Atlantic League and conclude with fielding questions. There will also be giveaways of memorabilia autographed by Robinson.
The visit is part of a Southern Maryland Blue Crabs community caravan, in which representatives and members of the team travel around the tri-county area. The Blue Crabs open their season at Regency Furniture Stadium in Waldorf May 2. The team is in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball, an eight team league formed in 1998.
Robinson played third base for the Baltimore Orioles from 1955 – 1977 where he set major league career records for games, putouts, assists, chances, double plays and fielding percentage. A clutch hitter, Robinson totaled 268 career home runs, at one time an American League record for third basemen. Robinson earned the league's MVP award in 1964 and the World Series MVP in 1970, when he hit .429 and made a collection of defensive gems. He was elected into the Hall of Fame in 1983 and in 1999 was named to the All Century Team - honoring the best 25 players in baseball during the 20th century.
