Fort Detrick and the Medical Research and Materiel Command welcomed Command Sgt. Maj. Michael Kelley as the top noncommissioned officer on post in an Assumption of Responsibility Ceremony in March.

Kelley joined the MRMC after serving as the 32nd Medical Brigade command sergeant major at Fort Sam Houston, Texas.

As the principle advisor of enlisted matters and a Soldier advocate to the commanding general, Kelley said he will lead the troops on post by example.

‘‘I’m going to start with myself,” he said. ‘‘I will lead the way for other Soldiers to follow.”

Kelley said he will focus on the missions Maj. Gen. George Weightman lays out for the command and will help guide the Soldiers and community through the ‘‘enormous changes on the installation.”

He said one of the ways he can be effective is by helping Fort Detrick develop bonds with the local community. As a former Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal winner, he said knows how to inspire other’s to do the same.

Although his job is within the command, he said he understands how it fits in the bigger picture of the Army mission and has experience with Army transformations, such as BRAC.

‘‘I’ll be able to share that wisdom to make us stronger team members,” he said.
