Meritorious Service Medal heads NSASP ceremony

The armed forces’ Meritorious Service Medal, which signifies outstanding meritorious achievement or service to the United States, was awarded to Cmdr. (Chaplain) Lynn Peterson as the Naval Support Activity South Potomac celebrated its quarterly captain’s call and awards ceremony last week at Naval Support Facility Indian Head. Peterson was honored for what was termed ‘‘exemplary leadership” in supporting protestant and Roman Catholic religious services at NSASP.

Also honored in the military portion of the ceremony were Chief Petty Officer James Green and Petty Officer Jennifer Barnett as each was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal. Additionally, petty officers Gilbert Thomas, Robert Ehrhart, Jr. and Jason Gragson received the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals.

Navy civilians honored at the ceremony included NSASP Civilian of the Quarter Richard Redell and Civilian Supervisor of the Quarter, Doris Copen. Tina Reese-Sims and Charlotte ‘‘Kay” Knott were recognized as Civilian of the Quarter nominees. Also, Naval District Washington certificates of recognition were made to Charles Miedzinski for his selection as Civilian Supervisor of the Quarter (October-December 2007) and Constance Byrd, George Revoir and Carol Sparbel for their nominations as Civilians of the Quarter (October-December 2007), and to Marilyn Henry for her selection as 2007 Civilian Supervisor of the Year.

In addition, Certificates of Recognition were made to David Byrne, Soong Woo, Robert Walters, Robert Mason, John Kirwin, Redell, Sharon Inscoe, Terri Cross and Tim Bennett by the Joint Force Headquarters of the National Capital Region for their support of the 2008 State of the Union Address.

Certificates of Appreciation were also made to Petty Officers Nathan Rose, Chris Washington, Thomas, and Navy civilians Donald Owens and Karen Ramming for supporting the King George Middle School Science Fair as judges. Chief Petty Officer Kelly Walker and Petty Officers Thomas and Washington were recognized with the honor also for their support of the Colonial Beach Elementary School Science Fair.

Length of Service Awards at the ceremony were made to Navy civilians Edward Stillwell (35 years), Henry (25 years), Eugene F. Johnson, Jr. (25 years), Robert Faust (20 years), Leslie Green (20 years), Mark Kowalski (15 years), Johanna Middleton (10 years), David Mitchell (10 years) and Cecil Richards (10 years).
