NCO Association annual convention

The Noncommission Officers Association (NCOA) will hold its annual Convention and Business Meeting July 15-18 at the Golden Nugget Hotel in Las Vegas. Complete information and registration is available at www.ncoausa.org. For more information, call (800) 662-2620 ext. 261.

Family advocacy offers life skills classes

Family Advocacy Program offers weekly life skills classes, held in Little Hall’s classroom No. 2 it starts at 9 a.m.

Communications and relationships classes are held Mondays. During this class, participants will learn practical skills for maintaining and developing successful relationships. Communication types and problem solving are also discussed.

Stress management classes are held Wednesdays. This class focuses on identifying sources of stress, and helps participants address their physical and emotional stressors and responses. Participants also learn how to develop a plan to manage their stress.

Anger management classes are held Fridays. During this class, participants learn how to identify sources of anger and what they can do to deal with that anger. Class also presents strategies for dealing with anger in healthy ways and a plan to manage anger when it occurs.

Post deployment support groups now offered

A post deployment spouses support group is offered every Thursday at the MCFTB House, Qtrs 206, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. The class helps spouses to cope with questions and concerns while providing a forum for networking with other spouses dealing with their service members who have returned from deployments.

Another support group session is offered from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. every Thursday at the MCFTB House, Qtrs 206. This class focuses on helping spouses understand the emotional cycle of deployments. Licensed family life consultants help facilitate the workshop.

Secret Service recruitment, testing

The Secret Service will administer the Police Officer Seletion test for the Uniformed Division Officer position today at 8:30 a.m. in Little Hall’s classroom 2. For more information, contact Barbara West at (703) 784-2511.

New Parent Support Program

New Parent Support Program is sponsoring a ‘‘Cooperative Parenting and Divorce” workshop.

The four-hour educational workshop is for separating or divorcing military parents and is based on the Cooperative Parenting Curriculum that is designed to improve the quality of the parental relationships in situations of separation or divorce. Goals of the program are to assist parents in shifting their role from former spouses to co-parents, educate parents regarding the impact of parental conflict on their child’s development, help parents identify their contributions to conflict while increasing impulse control and teach parents anger management, communication and conflict resolution skills and address children’s issues.

Sponsorship training

Marine Corps Community Service is offering sponsorship training today and April 10 from 9 to 10:30 a.m. in Little Hall’s classroom 60.

The training is designed to help sponsors in the performance of their duties. Checklists and an overview of the duties will be provided at the training. The class will help eliminate commonly overlooked items that are essential to the newcomer.

Military Academic Skills Program

The Military Academic Skills Program is designed to improve the competencies in the academic skills of reading, communication⁄writing and mathematics. In turn, Marines will be better prepared to retake the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery test and to perform their mission. Classes are held between 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. For sessions that contain a holiday break, hours may be extended to meet course requirements. This is an on-duty program and command approval is required for enrollment. An ‘‘Administrative Action” form may be obtained from the education office. For more information, call (703) 784-4010.

    Red Cross seeks volunteers

    The American Red Cross is currently seeking volunteers not only for Red Cross opportunities, but for many other programs on Quantico Marine Corps Base as well. Volunteers make up over 90 percent of the American Red Cross. Volunteer positions are available for administration, disaster preparation, health, safety, education, and assisting in special events in the community.   • Adult CPR⁄AED: Cost is $55 for nonmilitary and $44 for military April 17 from 6 to 10 p.m. at Little Hall.

  • Infant and Child CPR: Cost is $55 for nonmilitary and $44 for military March 27 and April 24 from 6 to 10 p.m. at Little Hall.

  • Standard First Aid: Cost is $45 for nonmilitary and $36 for military May 1 from 6 to 10 p.m. Visit Web site for locations.

  • CPR⁄AED for the professional rescuer: Cost is $65 for nonmilitary and $52 for military March 29 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Costello Park Recreation Center in Manassas Park. Note: Students must bring pocket mask or purchase one for $`13.25 at the class.

  • Babysitter’s Training: Cost is $50 for nonmilitary and $40 for military April 5 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Little Hall.

    National Guard Bureau Officers’ Wives Club now offering scholarships

    The National Guard Bureau Officers’ Wives Club is accepting applications through Monday for the 2008 Academic and Needs-Assessed scholarships.

    Spouses Organization offers scholarships

    The Quantico Officers’ Spouses Organization annual merit college scholarship applications are now being accepted.

    Last year, $14,000 was award to eligible students. The scholarships are awarded to dependent children of active duty, retired or deceased service members, who live in the greater Quantico area. For more information or to download applications, visit www.qoso.org.

    Navy-Marine Corps Ball fundraiser

    The 2008 Navy-Marine Corps Ball is scheduled for April 5 in Washington, D.C., at the Washington Hilton. This ball has been held almost every year since 1904 and is the major fund-raising event in support of the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society.

    Last year’s ball raised more than $500,000 through corporate and personal donations. The Ball Committee, with Mrs. Emerson Gardner as chairman, has set a goal of $1,000,000 for 2008.

    All funds raised by the Ball are used by the Society to provide financial, educational and other assistance to Navy and Marine Corps servicemen and their dependents. Assistance is available at Navy and Marine Corps bases located throughout the world and on board Navy ships.

    Potomac CFC accepting applications

    Would you like to see your favorite charity listed as an agency in the CFC this year? The Potomac CFC is now accepting applications for local human service charities to be involved in the 2008-2009 CFC.

    Applications are due on April 4. Approved charities will be eligible to receive designations from federal employees located in the counties of King George, Essex, King and Queen, Lancaster, Northumberland, Richmond, Westmoreland, Caroline, Stafford, Spotsylvania, Fauquier, Culpeper, Orange, Rappahannock, Madison, the City of Fredericksburg and the Marine Corps Base Quantico.     Park University is offering a scholarship for spouses and dependents of active duty military assigned, attached or residing in the vicinity of Metropolitan District of Washington area.

    The military family scholarship is for the period of July 1 to June 30, 2009. All applications must be completed by Monday.

    Volunteers needed for care package stuffing

    The USO is looking for about 150 volunteers April 19 to help assembling care packages for deployed troops. Volunteers will be treated to a special ‘‘stuffing party” that includes a barbecue hosted by Jack Daniels and a concert by country music star Craig Morgan. Volunteers may bring a guest to the barbecue .

    The package assembly and party will be held aboard Quantico with registration starting at 11 a.m., package stuffing at noon, the barbecue at 4 p.m. and concert at about 5 p.m.

    New Parent Support Group offers mom’s support group

    New Parent Support Group is offering a mom’s support group Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the NPSP activity room. Life as a military spouse is challenging. Add small children and deployments into the equation and it can really get tough. Network with local area moms. Discuss parenting issues with other moms and New Parent Support staff.     EFMP implements respite care program

    The Exceptional Family Member Program has implemented a respite care program, which will allow 40 monthly hours of care for enrolled family members. Family members with a qualifying condition and are impacted by the Global War on Terror are eligible for the care.     Bowling center offers specials for spring break

    Quantico Thrift Shop offers scholarships

    The Quantico Thrift Shop will be awarding Scholarships to graduating seniors this spring. In order to qualify for consideration, a student must meet the following requirements:

  • Be a graduating senior of active duty U S Marine stationed at one of the commands aboard Quantico, or dependent of retired or deceased U S Marine living within 25 mile radius of Quantico, or dependent of a Thrift Shop volunteer with a minimum of 100-hours of current shop service.

  • Graduating senior must be entering a college or university, school of nursing, trade or other school above high school level during the school year following graduation from high school.

    Applications for the Quantico Thrift Shop Scholarship can be picked up at the shop, which is located at Building 3074.
