The lead petty officer for the Range Surveillance Center at Pt. Mugu, Calif., was named NAVAIR Sailor of the Year during a March 6 ceremony here.
Operations Specialist First Class Christina Garcia, who works at VX-30, will now compete against 50 other Sailors from major shore commands for the title of Vice Chief of Naval Operations Naval Shore Activities Sailor of the Year.
She is one of five petty officer nominees honored at the ceremony.
Achievement medals were given to Aviation Electronics Technician First Class James Young, who works for NAVAIR as the project lead for the Metrology Automated Systems for Uniform Recall and Reporting program; Aviation Ordnanceman First Class Kyle Musicant of the Fleet Readiness Center at Pax; Aviation Structural Mechanic First Class Christopher McDowell of the Naval Air Pacific Repair Activity in Atsugi, Japan; and Information Systems Technician First Class Denise Holmes, a webmaster customer service representative for NATEC in San Diego.
NAVAIR Commander Vice Adm. David Venlet, praised all five Sailors as "deckplate leaders who drive mission accomplishment every day.
"They represent a rich return on the investment made by former petty officers and chiefs committed to leadership excellence," he said.
"Getting to this level of competition means these five nominees had to prove themselves more than once - and be selected more than once - to represent their individual commands. Accomplishing that alone deserves our congratulations."
