Intramural playoffs are right down the alley

Victor Seabrooks, a member of the All-Marine bowling team and TACO team player, pulls back before launching the bowling ball down the lane during one of the last matches before the playoffs.
There are not many frames left to be bowled in this year’s base Intramural Bowling League. Each of the top eight teams will battle it out for a shot at the championship.

Last night a position round where the scheduled competition will be based on current standings was held, said Charles Gold, league secretary, that is where first place plays second, and third plays fourth all the way down to last place were announced.

‘‘We are in first place now, but this is like basketball – other then winning the division, as long as you make the top eight, we have to do a roll off,” said Victor Seabrooks, a member of the All-Marine Bowling Team and the Training Activities Company team.

‘‘This will be Week 20, and there are only five weeks left. Each team during those weeks can earn seven points a week for a total of 35 points.

Most teams now are fighting for position in order to make the playoffs, but some still have the fun, little rivalries on the side.

‘‘They have this one team right now that has another guy, and me and him are fighting for the high average, but I have the high score in the league right now,” Seabrook said. ‘‘I told him I was going to hang with him, but now I am going to run right past him like a PFT.”

Teams are trying to position themselves to make the playoffs. Week 25 will also be a position round, giving bubble teams one last chance to enter the playoffs.

‘‘At the end of the regular season, a championship tournament will be held,” Gold said. This tournament will consist of the top eight finishing teams from the regular season, competing in a single-elimination tournament to determine the year’s winner.

‘‘Right before I go to a big tournament I will come here and they will set up different oil patterns for me so when I go to different tournaments,” Seabrooks said. ‘‘So I know how to throw the ball, where to stand and what ball to use. So this bowling alley does help me.”

Matches in the tournament will consist of a three-game set. The team rolling the highest series for the match will be declared the winner and move on to the next round.

The first-place and second-place finishers of the tournament will receive team and individual awards. The third-place team will receive a team trophy.

‘‘These guys are moderate to beginner bowlers; you have a few average 170 to 180. But this league isn’t a competition league, it is more for camaraderie,” Seabrooks said. I meet a lot of beginners who want to learn. I met this guy tonight, and I gave him one of my bowling balls to bowl with for the night. I saw him pulling bowling balls of the rack, which are made of plastic, so I gave him a ball that has different chemicals in the cover stock, so he can see the different reactions. He wants to throw a hook, so I am going to give him a ball that is going to hook for him to see if he can control it, and he was on the other team.”

But there still is some competition in the league because the winners earn points toward the Commanders Cup.

‘‘The Commanding General’s Trophy points will be determined by tournament results. Just like ‘March Madness,’ a team can catch a hot streak and run the table,” Gold said. ‘‘In the past four years we have had two teams win the championship from the eighth spot. Currently, no team has been mathematically eliminated.”
