Death notices

Anyone with debt owed to or by the estate of Staff Sgt. Kenneth West must contact Maj. Keaven M. Stevenson, the Summary Court Officer for the Soldier. West passed away on November 23, 2007.Call Stevenson, (703) 571-9508 or keaven.m.stevenson@us.army.mil.

Anyone with debts owed to or by the estate of Sgt. 1st Class Keith Stephon Jackson must contact Chief Warrant Officer Mark Barrieault, the summary court officer for the Soldier, at (240) 857-5040. Jackson recently passed away at Andrews Air Force Base as a result of natural causes.

Anyone with debts owed to or by the estate of Spc. Kevin Mowl, Fort Lewis Infantry Company, must contact Capt. Keith Beam, the summary court officer for the Soldier, at (202) 758-4160. Mowl recently passed away at Bethesda National Naval Medical Center as a result of injuries suffered in Iraq.

Maj. Angela J. Burth regretfully announces the death of Master Sgt. John G. Barriball III. Anyone having claims against or indebtedness to the estate of the Soldier should contact Burth, Summary Court Officer, (703) 693-8792.

Laundry, dry cleaning done

Laundry and dry cleaning services at Henderson Hall will be discontinued at close of business Monday, March 31. Clothing will no longer be accepted for cleaning after March 15. Patrons are encouraged to pick up clothing left for cleaning as soon as possible. Arrangements may be made to pick up clothing not picked up after March 31 by calling (703) 979-8420 ext. 110. Tailoring service will continue to be offered in the Military Clothing Sales Store (Uniform Shop). For more information, call (703) 979-8420 ext. 130.

Orthodox Divine Liturgy

An Eastern Orthodox Divine Liturgy to celebrate the Great Feast of the Annunciation to the Theotokos (Virgin Mary) will be offered on Tuesday, March 25, at 7:30 a.m. (note earlier time than usual) in the “Meditation Room“ of the MDW Command Chaplain's Office Chapel, Building 45, Fort McNair, DC.

Chap. (Col.) Alexander Webster, Orthodox priest, will conduct the service. Orthodox military and civilian personnel are encouraged to participate, and non-Orthodox are also invited to attend.

Month of the Military Child

April is the Month of the Military Child and Child Abuse Prevention Month. To kick off the festivities and events for April, the Fort Myer and Fort Belvoir ACS Family Advocacy Programs are joining forces to host a spaghetti dinner on Friday, March 28. The dinner will be held in the Fort Belvoir Community Club from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The dinner is free, but tickets are required for attendance.

McNair dining facility closure

Green to Gold briefing

If you’re a quality enlisted Soldier with officer potential and have served at least two years on active duty, then you are allowed to voluntarily participate and enroll in Army ROTC through Green to Gold programs. The Georgetown University Scholarship and Enrollment Officer presents Green to Gold briefings every Thursday from noon to 1 p.m at the Fort Myer Education Center.

Resumix policy change

If Resumix records show that it has been more than one year since an applicant’s last self-nomination for an Army job vacancy (or if the applicant has not self-nominated after a year of entering their resume), their resume will be deleted from the system. Deleted applicants may resubmit their resumes at any time.

Chili, 5k run against assault

FMMC is hosting a competitive 5k run on April 9 at 6:30 a.m. to raise awareness of sexual assault and in support of assault survivors. April is National Sexual Assault Awareness Month. At 11 a.m. at the Fort Myer Chapel, the Fort Myer Family Advocacy Team will hold chili cook-off, with prizes going to the three best chilis.

MDW training course

The JFHQ-NCR⁄MDW Commanders and First Sergeants Training Course will take place April 7-9 at Fort Myer Memorial Chapel (across from the post exchange). The course acquaints new and prospective company leaders with some of the challenges of command and the resources available to assist them in resolving and addressing those challenges within the National Capitol Region. All JFHQ-NCR⁄MDW company commanders and first sergeants are required to attend this training, per MDW Regulation 350-5.

Individuals interested in participating should contact their unit S3 or installation DPTMS. The final list of individuals recommended to participate is due in the MDW IG Office no later than March 24.

Money management class

Army Community Service Financial Readiness Program is offering a ‘‘First Termers Money Management” course Friday, March 28, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. It will be taught in the ACS Classroom, Bldg. 201, Fort Myer.

Senior softball league

Northern Virginia Senior Softball seeks men 50 and older and women 40 and older. NVSS will have 25 teams organized by skill level. Players will play Tuesday and Thursday mornings on Fairfax County fields from April 15 to August 8. An indoor conditioning program for members runs through April 10. In June, all players who served in the military will play in the 12th Annual Esprit de Corps Tournament.

Fort Myer ladies’ softball

Ladies’ softball tryouts and practice will be held on the following days: March 22 and 29 (Saturdays) from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Monday, March 31 and Wednesday, April 2 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Practice will be held at the Fort Myer Sports Complex, near the Commissary.

Practices will continue on Mondays and Wednesdays, beginning April 7. Fairfax County league play begins May 6 and continues every Tuesday through mid-July.

Easter sunrise service

Arlington National Cemetery and the Military District of Washington will host anon-denominational Easter Sunrise Service on Sunday, March 23 at the cemetery’s Memorial Amphitheater. The service will begin at 6:15 a.m. with a prelude performance by the U.S. Air Force Band, followed by the call to worship at 6:30 a.m.

Free public parking will be available in the cemetery parking lot. The Fort Myer Old Post Chapel parking lot will be open to all Department of Defense identification card holders. A free shuttle bus will begin at 5:30 a.m. from both locations. Walking from Fort Myer will be prohibited.

The service is open to members of the military community, general public and media. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis, so please arrive early to receive the best seating options. For more information, call (703) 607-8000.

Easter Bunny brunch

MWR is pleased to announce the arrival of a special guest: the Easter Bunny will join us at brunch on Sunday, March 23, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Spates Community Club, Fort Myer. The menu includes breakfast items such as waffles, french toast, grits and eggs, as well as salmon, chicken marsala, roast pork loin and a carvingstation.

Reservations are required; the brunch costs $11.95 for children ages 6 to 12 and $19.95 for adults. The cost includes one photo with the Easter Bunny and one giveaway per child. Call the Spates Community Club at (703) 527-1300⁄1302 to reserve your place.

Tax Center Open

The Fort Myer Military Community Tax Center staff provides free federal and state income tax return preparation and electronic filing in Fort Myer's Building 406, next to the Bowling Center, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.weekdays. Walk-ins are welcome for federal Form 1040EZ filers (W2s and one 1099⁄DIV⁄INT generally), and all others will be helped by appointment at (703) 696-1040. The Tax Center will offer services to active duty, retired military personnel of all services and their family members for 2007 returns.

To have tax forms completed at the Tax Center, bring the following documents with you: military ID, all W-2s, all 1099s, 1098s, etc., SSN for all dependents, EIN for day care providers,documents supporting deductions and credits, copies of 2006 federal and state tax forms, and as appropriate, powers of attorney and IRS Form 2848.

Infant Car Seats Available

Child safety is a concern to all parents. to help active duty military families, the USO of Metropolitan Washington provides infant car seats for their children of service members. USO-Metro will loan a brand new infant car seat-suitable for newborns to two years of age-for up to six months free. This program is sponsored by GEICO.

Scholarship opportunity

The National Guard Officers Wives Club is accepting applications for their 2008 academic and needs assessed scholarships through March 31. Applicants must be a 2007-2008 high school senior or presently enrolled as a full-time college student who has not received a scholarship previously from the NGB OWC. The applicant's parent or spouse can be officer, enlisted or civilian and must fit one of the following categories: be either Army or Air National Guard assigned to the National Guard Bureau on the T-10 AGR tour program; be active Army or Air Force personnel assigned to the NGB; be retired from the T-10 AGR program with NGB; be deceased personnel whose previous assignment was the NGB; or be civilian personnel (GS civilians only) working full-time for the NGB.

Engaging aging

Andrew Rader US Army Health Clinic Behavioral Health Services is offering a Senior Group for people who are 65 and over.

FAST helps raise GT score

Interested in raising your GT score to change your MOS or attend an NCOES? If so, FAST (Functional Academic Skills Training) is the way to go. FAST provides Soldiers the opportunity to gain the skills needed to raise their GT scores. Instruction is based on deficient subject areas reflected by TABE score results.

Academic achievement is the most important criteria in determining the selection of recipients for the Academic Scholarship with points assessed in the following way: academic achievement - 50 possible points; original essay - 25 possible points; leadership - 15 possible points; extracurricular activities - 10 possible points.

The Need Assessed Scholarship will be awarded based on the special needs (adversity, challenge overcome) of a candidate in conjunction with academic ability, assessed as follows: academic achievement - 40 possible points; special need - 40 possible points; original essay - 20 possible points. Applicants for either scholarship must attach an original essay (about 500 words) to describe their needs, personal and professional goals and plans for achieving their goals. Also with a complete, signed scholarship form, applicants must include official high school or college transcripts and copy of SAT⁄ACT score report, if scores aren't listed on transcripts, and a photocopy (both sides) of the military dependent ID card.
