The Bolling Aviator
March is Women’s History Month and the Bolling Women’s History Committee has planned to close out the official Wing observance with special events the last week of the month. As part of their month-long efforts, the committee has contributed articles and highlighted local women’s history events to the Aviator to foster knowledge and interest in Women’s History Month.

The Women’s History Luncheon will be held on March 27 at the Club in the Tuskegee Lounge. The luncheon will host keynote speaker Brig. Gen. Theresa M. Casey, as well as a presentation honoring five important women called ‘‘Voices of Valor” and musical entertainment by Strolling Strings, part of the Air Force Band.

A free bazaar after the luncheon featuring education and information on women’s health issues exemplifies the luncheon’s theme ‘‘Cultivating Mind, Body and Soul.” The committee has invited several representatives from all over the base to educate about the spirituality, mental health and physical health of women.

Captain Shakesha Anderson Clarke, of the 579th Medical Group and chair of the Women’s History Month Committee and the planning committee, is excited about celebrating women of the past, present and future.

‘‘We’re getting a chance not only to honor women who have contributed to history in major ways, some of the giants, but we’re also starting look at how we’re making history every day,” she said. ‘‘People amongst us are really working hard to keep our country running, keep inventions flowing, nurturing our children, nurturing our communities and in the military, even giving their lives.”

Other events for Women’s History Month are a Youth Center Essay Contest with the theme, ‘‘What Women’s History Means to Me.” Children from grades 1-8 should submit their essays to the Youth Center no later than March 24. The winners will be announced at the luncheon and will receive gift card prizes. A Women’s Historical Bus Tour has also been planned for March 24. The free tour will take 25 passengers on an afternoon tour of memorials and monuments throughout Washington, D.C., as well as focus on women’s history.

‘‘Even when they tour the Lincoln Memorial,” Anderson Clarke said, ‘‘they’re going to talk about some of the contributions made (by women). It should be pretty informative and exciting for those who are going.”
