A ‘Bunch of Moms’ wins the CrossFit Challenge

Four Bolling family members took home the first-place trophy for the Bolling CrossFit Challenge March 14.

“I'm extremely proud of all the competitors,“ said Col. Kurt Neubauer, 11th Wing commander. “This is not just a great fitness challenge – it's a great way for our Airmen to develop esprit de corps, vigor and combat conditioning.“

The Bunch of Moms, also known as the BOM Squad, included Yuki Riley, Jennifer Towns, Sandy Neubauer and Christy Nielsen. The BOM Squad totaled 143 points in the competition, 30 points better than their closest rivals.

Maj. John Winkler, 2nd Lt. Elliot Brouse, Tech. Sgt. Richard Daniel and Staff Sgt. Roel Mora made up the LRS Warriors. They earned the second-place trophy. An 11th Services Squadron team finished last and received the boot plaque, a traveling award, which reads, “You got the boot, so get fit to fight.“

According to Isaac Melendez, 11th Services Division, the CrossFit Challenge was designed to enhance overall performance in physical fitness, health and everyday living while using the concepts of teamwork and friendly competition for motivation.

CrossFit requires proficiency in each of 10 fitness domains: cardiovascular and respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, agility, balance, coordination, and accuracy. It uses free weights, kettlebells, gymnastics rings, pull-up bars and many calisthenics exercises. While brief, often 20 minutes or less, CrossFit workouts typically call for participants to work hard and fast, often with no rest.

“The CrossFit system is general in nature and used by Olympic athletes, professional athletes, mom, pops, kids, the young and the old,“ Melendez said. “All the exercises are the same for the above categories except the intensity. I guarantee once you try CrossFit, you will be hooked.“

CrossFit classes are held Mondays and Wednesdays at 6 and 7 a.m., with two classes Thursdays, one at 11 a.m. and for women only, at noon.
