Accident avoidance training encouraged

E-Mail This Article Print This Story
The Installation Safety Office (ISO) is promoting the use of Accident Avoidance Training (AAT).

All Active Army, National Guard, Army Reserve Soldiers, and civilian personnel (excluding contractor personnel) whose positions will require operation of government-owned or leased vehicles or equipment should be trained, tested, and issued an OF 346 (U.S. Government Motor Vehicle Operatorís Identification Card) according to Army Regulations 385-55 and 600-55.

This training provides guidance to reduce their risk of death or injury from Army Motor Vehicle (AMV) and Privately Owned Vehicle (POV) accidents.

The training focuses on the prevention of accidents and is available so that all personnel know the main causes of vehicular accidents. Any violations of AR 385-55 may result in the denial of on-post driving privileges. Disciplinary or administrative actions will be enforced for any associated traffic accidents or violations.

Before operating an Army Motor Vehicle, all personnel including all new permanent duty Soldiers under the age of 26 or without a civilian driverís license, must attend the local Driverís Training Program or take an online course within 30 days after reporting to the installation. The course focuses on safe driving behaviors and awareness. It stresses individual responsibility and the correct response to routine or emergency driving situations. The training program of instruction includes causes of accidents, emotions and accident causation, how to avoid a collision with another vehicle, effects of drug and alcohol, how to control fatigue while driving, pedestrian safety precautions, and driverís view of motorcycles.

The training includes safety restraint usage, counseling of traffic law offenders, enforcement, inspection and registration of POVs and special requirements training (motorcycles and mopeds). The online course, offered through the U.S. Army Combat Readiness Center, is available at https://crc.army.mil. To enroll for the online course, visit the Combat Readiness University. Click ìTrainingî under the self-service menu, and then register through the Armyís Learning Management System. In the welcome window, click on ìTraining Catalog.î This opens a search window where users should enter ìArmyî in the product name block. Users may register here for the Army Traffic Safety Program, Accident Avoidance Course for Army Motor Vehicle Drivers. A confirmation e-mail will be sent. To access the online course, open ìRegistrationsî under the welcome ALMS welcome page. Click on ìTranscripts,î and then click on ìContents.î Open ìArmy POV-1-3î to complete course.

Remedial driverís training is also offered as part of the AAT and designed for drivers or operators who have had driver-at-fault accidents or traffic violations or have demonstrated a need for additional training. This training also identifies and corrects individual weaknesses in operating a vehicle. There is also a refresher/sustainment driverís training that must be completed every four years.
