IHDIV personnel support Charles County Science Fair

Capt. Stubits congratulates Kodie Hays from North Point Hish School who took second place in the Applied Science category.
The Charles County Science Fair was held on March 1 at the North Point High School for Science, Technology, and Industry. Capt. Neil Stubits, commander of Indian Head Division, Naval Surface Warfare Center, served as master of ceremonies for the awards ceremony. Over 50 personnel from the Indian Head Division judged the science fair entries.

The judging of individual school’s science fairs begins in the early months of each calendar year. IHDIV employees contribute more than 500 hours of their nonwork time to support these science fairs. Personnel get a chance to meet local students during information sharing sessions to discuss and demonstrate their projects.

The Indian Head Division presented special awards recognizing the top projects in Applied Science, Environmental Science, Engineering, Physics, and Research & Technology categories.

This year’s junior division Applied Science Award went to Cayley Dymond, of Theodore Davis Middle School, who took first place with his ‘‘The Aerodynamics of Different Satellite Shapes” project. The ‘‘Viscosity and Droplets” project, created by Krista Back, from Milton Somers Middle School and Numa Robertson Jr., project ‘‘Air Guns: Does Weight Affect the Shot?” also from Somers, won second place in the junior division. IHDIV awarded Dymond with a plaque and a $100 saving bond; Back and Robertson also received plaques and a $50 saving bond each.

In the senior division, the IHDIV Applied Science Award was presented to Matthew Barnett from McDonough High School who’s ‘‘Effect of Temperature on Riffle Projectile Velocity” project took first place. Victoria Ritter, from La Plata High School, and Kodie Hayes from North Point High School, for Science, Technology, and Industry, took second place with their projects, Ritter’s project titled ‘‘The Pressure is On” and Hayes project title ‘‘Composite or Not Composite? That is the Question.” Barnett was presented a plaque and $100 savings bond. Ritter and Hayes were presented plaques and a $50 savings bond each. Barnett received a plaque inscribed with his name, date and high school to hang at McDonough High School through the coming year.

The Environmental Protection Award was presented to Kristina Milman, from North Point High School, for her ‘‘How’s the Bay’s Health?” project. Milman received a plaque, $100 savings bond and a plaque inscribed with her name, date and high school to display at North Point High School through the coming year.

The Research & Technology award, recognizing the top project in Chemistry was presented to Gavin Reen for his project ‘‘The Marvelous Magnetosphere III” from La Plata High School. Reen received a plaque and $100 savings bond.!
