Navy’s ice hockey team got goals from five different skaters to lead the Midshipmen to a 6-2 victory over the University of Virginia Cavaliers to win the inaugural Military Club Hockey Tournament. The Mids went undefeated in the tournament, defeating VMI 11-0 on Feb. 29, and The Citadel 12-0 on March 1.
Seniors Adam Shields and Donnie Horner scored Navy’s first two goals against Virginia while playing in their final Navy Hockey game. Junior Matt Swezey added two scores and Charlie Daniel and Patrick Heitman also contributed goals.
Sophomore goalie Jeremey Estevez recorded 15 saves on 17 shots, as the Mids outshot theCavs, 77-17.
Referee Sal Mazzola whistled 15 penalties, 7 against Navy and 8 against Virginia.
The Midshipmen finish the 2007-08 season with an overall record of 20-18-1. This record is made more remarkable by the fact that the Mids found themselves with a 6-12-1 mark at the mid-point of the season. Combined with last year’s 20-10-1 season, this marks the first time in Navy hockey history that the Mids have had back-to-back 20-win seasons.
