E-Mail This Article Print This Story
The U.S. Postal Service will issue “Distinguished Sailors stamps“ today to honor four sailors who served with bravery and distinction during the 20th century. Among those being honored is Doris Miller who is known as a Sailor who carried wounded fellow Sailors to safety before manning an anti-aircraft machine gun during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941.

The stamps will be unveiled in a ceremony at a First-Day-of-Issue Ceremony to be conducted at 10:30 a.m. at the Navy Memorial in downtown Washington, D.C.

For more information on Miller visit the Naval History and Heritage Command Web site’s ‘‘African Americans in the Navy” special section in honor of February as Black History Month at www.history.navy.mil.
