E-Mail This Article Print This Story
Hosted by Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD), the INFOSEC Symposium is an annual one-day training event held every February that brings together security experts and practitioners in the ranks of the U.S. government and support contractors.

This year’s symposium will be conducted Feb. 9 and kicks off at 8:30 a.m. in the Aegis BMD (Bldg 1705) auditorium aboard NSF Dahlgren.

It is scheduled to conclude at 5:30 p.m.

The goal of this symposium is to update government employees, military and supporting contractors on changes in information security policies, practices and guidelines.

It is highly recommended that each organization send at least one representative who will be able to pass on the information provided at this symposium. Admission is free.

Question: Is the theme the same each year?

Answer: Each year a theme is agreed upon and Subject Matter Experts are identified and booked as speakers.

This year’s theme is Information Operations — ‘‘A How-To Guide to Security.”

In today’s world, there are many threats against our country ranging from nuclear threats to cyber threats. It is important to learn about these and know how to protect yourself against these threats.

The current agenda also includes briefings on:

  • ‘‘Disposable Intelligence,” with Scott Milliman, Interagency OPSEC Support Staff.

  • ‘‘Information Operations — OPSEC in the 21st Century,” with James Magdalenski, Navy Information Operations Command.

  • ‘‘Virtual Worlds: The Rise of Avatars & the Hidden Internet,” with Scott Dueweke, Booz Allen Hamilton.

  • ‘‘Firewalls: Not the Silver Bullet of Network Security,” with Dave McCune, Interagency Training Center.

  • ‘‘How Did They Know That? Cell Phone and Wireless Vulnerabilities,” with Dave Gollam, Interagency Training Center.

  • ‘‘Anti-Terrorism Level 1 Training,” with Alex Logan, MDA⁄DXSSS.

Q: Can anyone attend and if so, how do you register for the symposium?

A: The symposium is open to all DOD civilians, military members and defense contractors.

People outside of the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) who want to attend the INFOSEC Symposium can register by e-mailing Kathleen Kelly at kathleen.kelly.ctr@ mda.mil or Sandra Wilson at sandra.wilson.ctr@mda.mil, or by calling the registration number they see on the marquee in front of the main gate.

MDA and Aegis BMD employees can register through the training section on the Missile Defense Portal.

Attendees will have to send their clearances because this year’s symposium will be held at the SECRET level.
