MWR EVENTS

Pax River Chess Club

This club is open to all base personnel. The Club meets today, and will meet the first Thursday of each Month from 6-8 p.m., in the Liberty Center dining room. The next being meeting date is March . USCF Membership ID is not required to participate in the monthly club meetings; however, the Chess Club will also hold USCF-sanctioned tournaments periodically where a USCF Membership ID is required. The Pax River Chess Club is open to all chess newcomers, beginners and experts. Monthly meetings will consist of practice matches and training scenarios. Intramural Table Tennis Tournament

The Drill Hall will host this annual event Tuesday. Pre-Tournament meeting will begin at 10 a.m. Play begins immediately upon conclusion of the meeting. For more information call the Sports and Fitness director at 301-757-1194.

Couch to 5K Running Class

Thinking about trying your first 5K race? Or maybe you haven’t run on in a while? This class meets twice weekly for eight weeks to get you ready just in time for the Earth Day 5K on April 15. You will be provided with a training program. The organizational meeting will be held at the Bowling Center on Tuesday beginning at 11:30 a.m. Free. For more information call 301-995-3869.

Round Dance Class at Energy Zone

Round dancing is a fun, social activity where couples dance synchronously to cued choreographic routines that exercise body, mind and soul. It is like ballroom dancing and uses ballroom figures, but there are two major differences: It is choreographed ahead of time and is it cued to the dancers. Dance class will meet Wednesdays, 4:30-6:30 p.m. in Studio B. Classes are Feb. 10-April 28. Cost is $120 per couple for a 12-week session. Register at the Fitness and Sports Administration Office by next Tuesday.

Biggest Loser Contest 2010

MWR’s Biggest Loser Contest 2010 will begin on Feb. 10 and run for 12 weeks. You will be challenged to get into shape and lose body fat! Teams of two will compete to be the biggest Loser! Registration deadline is Tuesday at the Drill Hall Sports and Fitness Office. This event is free for active duty and $10 for all other participants. Prizes will be awarded to first and second place individual and teams. Call 301-342-5449 for more information.

Grand Opening Mardi Gras Partyat the River’s Edge

Come to the River’s Edge on next Friday for our Grand Opening Party. Ribbon cutting will be at 3 p.m. Tour the facility, experience our hospitality and then beginning at 5 p.m. DJ Brown will start the music. At 7 p.m., ‘‘The Great Train Robbery” will rock the night. There will be appetizers, party favors and more! Don't miss it. Appropriate attire is required. Indiscreet or provocative clothing will not be permitted.

Sweetheart Getawayat NRC Solomons

On Presidents Day weekend (federal holiday), Feb. 12-15, you can enjoy a weekend away with your sweetheart. A two-night stay is only $120; a three-night stay is only $150. These special rates at NRC Solomons are applicable only to the cabins, apartments and bungalows, and valid only Feb. 12-15. Running Clinic

The MWR Fitness Department is hosting a ‘‘Prepare for your PRT” Running Clinic beginning on March 2 at 6:30 a.m. at the outdoor track. This clinic will meet every Tuesday morning. Workouts will include sprints, intervals and other running drills. The Running Clinic is a free clinic for active duty military only. For more information contact Jillann Naegel at 301-342-5449.

Intramural Spring Sports Meetings

The meeting dates for the start up of NAS Pax River’s Spring Softball, Golf and In-Line Hockey Intramural programs are as follows: Softball meeting, March 8; in-line hockey meeting, March 9; and golf meeting, March 24. All meetings will be held at the Drill Hall Bowling Center beginning at 1 p.m. If you are interested in joining any of these intramural leagues but do not have a team, feel free to contact the Fitness and Sports Office at 301-757-1194 and we will work to find you a team.

Earth Day Poster Contest

The Rassieur Youth Center will be holding an Earth Day Poster Contest. The contest is free to enter. The winner will have his or her poster become the Earth Day T-shirt logo for the base for 2010 Earth Day Walk⁄Run. Guidelines: Use no more then three colors. Entry must be no larger than 8.5 by 11. Submit all entries to the Rassieur Youth Center by March 1. For more information, call 301-342-1694.

Mattapany Day Camp Registration

Registration dates for the Mattapany Day camp have been set. Interested parties can register on the following dates at the Rassieur Youth Center from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

FULL SUMMER REGISTRATION SCHEDULE

  • March 8-12: Registration open for Children enrolled in the School Age Care (SAC) program during the current year.

  • March 22-24: Registration starts for DoD Civilians.

  • March 15-20: Registration dates for Military families who are not enrolled in SAC, but need child care for the summer (priority given to military families who enroll for the entire summer program).

  • March 25-26: NDW contractors may register (If space is still available).

    Each patron registering for the entire summer, will have only one free vacation week. Vacation weeks must be submitted by April 16.

    WEEK TO WEEK CAMP REGISTRATION SCHEDULE

    (Subject to availability)

  • April 26-27: Military and SAC families may register.

  • April 29: Contractors may register.

  • April 28: DoD may register.

    Upon registration, you must pay a deposit of the last week’s payment for camp. Session 1 payment will be due. Contact the Youth Center at 301-342-1694 for questions.
