Hot work permits are required at Pax River

E-Mail This Article Print This Story
All operations that produce temperatures in excess of 400 degrees F are required to have a ‘‘Hot Work” permit prior to commencement of work.

To obtain a hot work permit you may do the following:

1. Call the Fire Prevention Department at 301-757-4678 or Fire Dispatch at 301-342-5974.

2. Provide the following information: Name of person, company or contractor; phone number; location of work; date and time of work; and type of hot work being performed.

The fire inspector will come to the location at the designated date and time to inspect the area of work, tools being used, and safety equipment and issue a permit. The Inspector will be assuring that all combustible materials and flammable liquids have been removed or rendered safe before writing the permit.

Inspectors can write it for up to 30 days at their discretion. Should the inspector feel the job is especially dangerous or is being conducted in a hazardous area, he could require a re-inspection upon completion of the hot work.

The operator shall have a fire watch that keeps vigil over the area during the hot work operation. This person should know what to do if a fire breaks out and possess a working knowledge of the operation of a fire extinguisher.

Tar pots should be inspected prior to lighting off. The tar pot cannot be used on the roof, inside, or within 25 ft of the bldg. The Max temperature the pot can heat is 550 degrees F. For more information, contact Pax River Fire Prevention Chief Carl W. Davis at, 301-757-4678.
