Military SpouseResidency Relief Act

Law S. 475, the Military Spouses Residency Relief Act allows the spouse of an active duty service member to retain residency in his or her home state for voting and tax purposes. Spouses often have to pay taxes in the new state or locality and lose the right to vote in the place they consider home. This legislation is intended to alleviate these and other burdens military families face when relocating with their active duty service members.

President Barack Obama said that this legislation ‘‘is an important means of maintaining the morale and readiness our Armed Forces and significantly enhances the ability of our military to effectively recruit and retain these highly valued service personnel.”
