The Defense Intelligence Agency’s National Center for Medical Intelligence (NCMI) is the nation’s premier producer and coordinator of all-source medical intelligence.

NCMI produces intelligence for global force protection and homeland health protection to safeguard U.S. interests worldwide.

NCMI responded immediately to the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that hit Haiti on January 12, 2010, by producing Haiti-related intelligence products on the evolving medical situation.

It also deployed a medical intelligence analyst to U.S. Southern Command headquarters and detailed a senior intelligence analyst to the Defense Intelligence Agency Directorate for Intelligence (J2) that supports the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in the Pentagon.

NCMI is producing multiple infectious disease, health services, environmental health, and medical infrastructure risk assessments for SOUTHCOM in support of the U.S. non-governmental organizations, and military units deployed for the humanitarian efforts in Haiti.

These reports are written to characterize the conditions on the ground to enable Department of Defense, U.S. government officials, and nongovernmental organizations to plan for proper medical countermeasures, health care support, and medical personnel support.

Many of NCMI’s Haiti health-related products have been provided to appropriate state and local customers by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security personnel within NCMI.

What is medical intelligence?

Medical intelligence is the assessment of potential health risks and health care capabilities which allows planning for proper medical countermeasures, health care support, and medical personnel support.

Medical intelligence on foreign health threats evaluates the possible impact or risk of these threats on forces deployed overseas and those in the homeland. NCMI also evaluates the potential for importation of foreign health threats to the United States and the potential impact of these threats on the health or welfare of U.S. forces stationed in the homeland, as well as on U.S. citizens.
