The U.S. Army Military District of Washington will observe African-American and Black History Month from Feb. 1-28 to recognize the countless, valuable contributions of African-Americans to our nation and the military. The theme for this year’s observance is ‘‘The History of Black Economic Empowerment.”
African-American and Black History Month is celebrated annually to affirm, recognize and appreciate the rich heritage, struggles, achievements, progress and diversity of African-Americans. It is a time to give tribute to African-Americans who have played central roles in some of the most triumphant and courageous moments in our nation’s history by urging reforms, overcoming obstacles and breaking down barriers. The achievements of African-Americans and their contributions to our society will be highlighted through various activities during the month of February.
Special and ethnic observances are conducted to recognize the contributions of people from all over the world to American culture. Observances increase awareness, mutual respect and understanding and provide an opportunity for individuals to interact with each other to broaden knowledge of other cultures and diverse groups of people. I encourage full support and participation of all Soldiers, Family members and civilian employees during this celebration. Command interest and involvement are key to the success of these activities.
