More than 100 servicemembers and civilian employees at the Washington Navy Yard have an advantage over their colleagues when it comes to the latest advances in information technology, such as systems integration and post-secondary IT education.
They spent some time checking out the exhibits of the Naval District Washington Technology Exhibition, Jan. 24 at the Catering and Conference Center.
GSN Office Furniture from Prince Frederick, Md., was among the 18 exhibitors displaying their products and services. Sam Skillin, who owns GSN Office Furniture with his wife, Cheryl, participates in events such as the Technology Exposition on the Yard.
‘‘This is a small venue,” said Skillin, as he glanced around the room where exhibitors had set up their displays. ‘‘But this is a good quality mix of vendors.”
Strayer University in Newington, Va., provided information about degree programs, such as in information systems, which are available to working adults.
‘‘We want to reach out to the military community about what we offer,” said Charlene Ford, educational liaison for the university.
National Conference Services Inc. coordinated the NDW Technology Exposition with the event’s sponsor, the NDW chief information office.
With input from leadership, exhibitors are invited by NCSI, an event planning, production and supply services company under contract to various federal agencies, primarily in the Department of Defense and intelligence community.
‘‘We also make sure to include feedback and requests we get from leadership and key IT personnel in other tenant organizations,” said Lisa Yin, NCSI federal event manager. ‘‘We want to make sure the event is benefiting the base as a whole.”
The NDW Technology Exposition is held annually at Washington Navy Yard.
