Electronics Technician 1st Class (SW⁄AW) Ryan Hogg

Electronics Technician 1st Class (SW⁄AW) Ryan Hogg of Waterfront Readiness Department is the Naval Academy Senior Sailor of the Quarter, 4th Qtr, CY07.

Hailing from Erie, Pa., the eight-year Navy veteran serves as Leading Petty Officer for the Waterfront Readiness Information Technology work center. He is also the Electrical Division Assistant Leading Petty Officer. Hogg leads a crew of 27 technicians in electrical and electronic repair maintenance, and is responsible for 21 Yard Patrol (YP) craft, 20 Navy 44-foot sail training craft, 81 auxiliary craft, and more than 200 network assets.

In his position, Hogg led the Electrical Division through a highly successful 2007 Board of Inspection and Survey material inspection consisting of five YPs.

‘‘It is a great to feeling to have your name out there as someone people can look up to and who can help them out,” said Hogg. ‘‘You have to depend a lot on your Sailors and make sure that they’ve been trained to the highest quality. You must also provide leadership to those who work underneath you so that they can accomplish their tasks proficiently and in a timely manner.”

In addition to his on-duty responsibilities, Hogg is a command financial specialist, responsible for educating Sailors in managing their income and taxes among many other subjects. Hogg also serves on the Naval Academy Enlisted Recreation Committee and Funeral Honors Detail.

‘‘His leadership style moves the division in the right direction and is the key to its success,” said Senior Chief Electronics Technician (SW⁄AW) Cliff Albanese, Hogg’s leading chief petty officer. ‘‘He’s a fine representative of what a Sailor should be. There’s no question in my mind that he is the right choice for Sailor of the Quarter and will make a fine chief petty officer in the future. I’m really proud of him.”

Hogg’s primary goal is earning the rank of chief petty officer, which he recently tested for. He is also working towards his bachelor’s degree in business administration, which he expects to complete in February. To those seeking to follow his example, he offered this advice:

‘‘Set a high standard of performance for yourself, and maintain it. Inhabiting the will to go above and beyond within yourself is important as a Sailor,” said Hogg. ‘‘When you see something is wrong, correct it. Take advantage of every opportunity presented to you and you‘ll excel.”
