WRAMC parking rules enforced with DPW ‘boot’

The D.C. Department of Public Works (DPW) booted three cars on the Walter Reed post, Jan. 23. The vehicles had two or more outstanding parking tickets from violations on post or elsewhere in the District.

ìWe share concurrent traffic adjudication with the District of Columbia, which enables them to come on post to do enforcement, booting or towing,î said Maj. Ronald Braswell with the WRAMC Provost Marshalís Office.

If individuals havenít paid their ticket within 72 hours after the boot is placed on their car, the vehicles will be towed said Braswell. With towing and storage fees totaling $100 or more, the costs of unpaid parking tickets could add up.

Initial parking fines double if a payment or hearing request is not received within 30 days. Failing to respond to a second ticket after 60 days, the vehicle can be booted. Outstanding fines plus the $75 boot removal fee add up to more than what most parking violators bargain for.

Braswell said D.C. DPW can appear on post to boot vehicles at anytime. And they can find the cars they are looking for.

ìTheyíre experts,î said Braswell. ìThey can find a car quickly.î

Braswell offered this advice for WRAMC drivers who want to avoid discovering a boot on their car at the end of a work day, ìContest your tickets in a timely fashion or pay them on time.î

He acknowledged the limited parking on post and recommended that employees carpool or use Metro transportation to avoid the temptation to park illegally and run the risk of receiving a ticket and possibly a boot.

Braswell said more than 150 tickets are issued weekly at WRAMC. According to the WRAMC Department of Public Works, there were about 4,403 spaces for about 8,778 military, civilian and contractor employees as of October, 2007.
