Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio, appointed the new Military Ordinary by Pope Benedict XVI and recently installed as the Archbishop for the Military Services, will visit the Roman Catholic parish at Walter Reed Army Medical Center on Ash Wednesday Feb. 6.
Broglio will be the main celebrant at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass at 1 p.m. in Heaton Pavilionís Joel Auditorium. As part of the Liturgy of Ash Wednesday, ashes will be distributed to all the faithful. All members of the Walter Reed community are invited to participate.
Broglio was born in Cleveland Heights, Ohio and earned his bachelorís degree in classics from Boston College, a bachelorís in sacred theology, and doctorate in Canon Law from the Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome. He was ordained to the priesthood (for the diocese of Cleveland) May 19, 1977 in the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception of the North American College, Rome.
From 1977 to 1979 he served as associate pastor, St. Margaret Mary Parish, South Euclid, and lectured in Theology at Notre Dame College, South Euclid. From 1979 to 1983, Broglio attended the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy.
From 1983 to 1987, Broglio served as Secretary of the Apostolic Nunciature in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. From 1987 to 1990 he served as Secretary of the Apostolic Nunciature in Asuncion, Paraguay. From 1990 to 2001, he served as Chief of Cabinet for Angelo Cardinal Sodano, Secretary of State to Pope John Paul II and desk officer for Central America
In February 2001, the Broglio was named Apostolic Nuncio to the Dominican Republic and Apostolic Delegate to Puerto Rico.
Broglio was ordained as an archbishop by Pope John Paul II on March 19, 2001. On Nov. 19, 2007, he was named the fourth Archbishop of the Military Services USA. (From the Department of Ministry and Pastoral Care, WRAMC)
