Roads, grounds repair ongoing

Asphalt repairs are continuing along Sheridan Avenue and McNair Road. Travel will be directed both ways. Work should be complete Feb. 15, weather permitting.

See Super Bowl on big screens

Service members, DoD civilians and spouses are invited to celebrate the Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 3 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Fort Myer’s Patriot Sports Zone located in Spates Community Club, Building 407, on McNair Road. Parking is plentiful across the street.

REMINDER: Fans must be 18 to join the festivities and 21 to drink alcohol.

Teaming up for this event are USO-Metro, FMMC Morale, Welfare and Recreation and the National Football League.

There will be NFL gifts, free game-day fare and a meeting with the Washington Redskins Cheerleader Ambassadors. There will be multiple wide-screen TVs and generous drink specials. Expect to see a special guest at the party.

In addition to service members stationed for duty in the National Capital Region and Department of Defense civilians, the Super Bowl Party will be open to injured service members who are recuperating at local hospitals.

Tax Center opens Feb. 4

The Fort Myer Military Community Tax Center will celebrate the coming tax season with a grand opening and ribbon cutting today, Feb. 1 at 10 a.m. at Fort Myer’s Building 406.

The Tax Center will not be open for business until Monday, Feb. 4, but everyone is invited to tour the facility and meet the Soldiers and civilian volunteers supporting Military District of Washington in tax assistance. Refreshments will be served. For more information, call 703-696-0761.

The Tax Center staff provides free federal and state income tax return preparation and electronic filing starting Monday, Feb. 4 in Fort Myer’s Building 406, next to the Bowling Center, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays. Walk-ins are welcome for federal Form 1040EZ filers (W2s and one 1099⁄DIV⁄INT generally), and all others will be helped by appointment at 703-696-1040. The Tax Center will offer services to active duty, retired military personnel of all services and their family members for 2007 returns.

To have tax forms completed at the Tax Center, bring the following documents with you: military ID, all W-2s, all 1099s, 1098s, etc., SSN for all dependents, EIN for day care providers, documents supporting deductions and credits, copies of 2006 federal and state tax forms, and as appropriate, powers of attorney and IRS Form 2848.

EEO seeks assistance

The Fort Myer Military Community Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) office is seeking Collateral Duty Special Emphasis Program Managers (SEPM) to represent the Native American, Asian-Pacific American and Individuals with Disabilities programs.

SEPMs function on a collateral duty basis and perform official EEO duties.

SEPM responsibilities are assigned to an employee in addition to his or her primary position duties. Training will be provided SEPMs assist the command in promoting the advancement, training and treatment of each targeted group. Responsibilities include identifying any barriers that restrict equal employment opportunity for women, minorities and individuals with disabilities.

Safety first in Arlington County

Arlington County Police will host a free, six-hour crime prevention event from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, at Kenmore Middle School, 200 South Carlin Springs Road, Arlington.

County policy officers will offer seminar and lectures on Internet safety, identity theft, auto theft, gangs and pedestrian safety.

Police officers will fingerprint children and give K9 demonstrations and fire fighters will distribute fire prevention materials.

Commissary = $$ = college

The Fort Myer Commissary is offering its annual ‘‘Scholarships for Military Children.” The deadline to have applications in is close of business Wednesday, Feb. 20.

This scholarship program is open to unmarried children under the age of 21 (23 if enrolled in school) of active duty, reserve component and retired military personnel. Applicants must be enrolled in DEERS and have an up-to-date ID card and be U.S. citizens. Applicants must be planning to attend or already attending an accredited college or university full-time in the fall term of 2008.

NGB OWC scholarships offered

The National Guard Officers Wives Club is accepting applications for their 2008 academic and needs assessed scholarships through Monday, March 31.

Children and spouses of military (Active Guard and Reserve) and GS civilian personnel assigned to or retired from the National Guard Bureau are eligible. Applicants must be a 2007-2008 high school senior or presently enrolled as a full-time college student who has not received a scholarship previously from the NGBOWC.

The applicant’s parent or spouse can be officer, enlisted or civilian and must fit one of the following categories: be either Army or Air National Guard assigned to the National Guard Bureau on the T-10 AGR tour program; be active Army or Air Force personnel assigned to the NGB; be retired from the T-10 AGR program with NGB; be deceased personnel whose previous assignment was the NGB; or be civilian personnel (GS civilians only) working full-time for the NGB.

Academic achievement is the most important creteria in determining the selection of recipients for the Academic Scholarship with points assessed in the following way: academic achievement - 50 possible points; original essay - 25 possible points; leadership - 15 possible points; extracurricular activities - 10 possible points.

The Need Assessed Scholarship will be awarded based on the special needs (adversity, challenge overcome) of a candidate in conjunction with academic ability, assessed as follows: academic achievement - 40 possible points; special need - 40 possible points; original essay - 20 possible points. Applicants for either scholarship must attach an original essay (about 500 words) to describe their needs, personal and professional goals and plans for achieving their goals. Also with a complete, signed scholarship form, applicants must include official high school or college transcripts and copy of SAT⁄ACT score report, if scores aren’t listed on transcripts, and a photocopy (both sides) of the military dependent ID card.

Mardi Gras road closures slated

The Arlington County Police Department will close Wilson Boulevard in the Courthouse and Clarendon neighborhoods Tuesday, Feb. 5, for the Clarendon Mardi Gras parade which begins at 8 p.m.

Wilson Boulevard from Veitch to Barton Streets will be closed from 6:45 to 9:30 p.m.; Wilson from Barton to Irving Streets will be closed from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.; and Adams and Wayne Streets between Clarendon and Wilson Boulevards will be closed from 6:45 to 8 p.m.

Parade attendees are urged to use Metro. The Courthouse and Clarendon stations on the Orange Line are located near the parade route. Street parking will be restricted and motorists should look for temporary ‘‘no parking” signs. Counseling services at Rader

The Behavioral Health Service at Andrew Rader U.S. Army Health Clinic offers psychiatric, psychological and counseling services to all military beneficiaries in the National Capital Region who are 18 years old and over. The clinic is staffed with a psychiatrist, two psychologists, several counselors and two social workers who specialize in domestic violence issues.

Services include outpatient assessment, individual treatment, crisis intervention, marital therapy, medication management, mental status exams, spouse and child abuse assessment and treatment, referrals and consultation with active duty Soldiers’ unit or command.

Plans are underway to reach out to the elderly population, including support groups and themed classes targeted at seniors.

No referral from Primary Care is necessary to see a counselor at Behavioral Health. Hours are from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Appointments are made for routine care, but no one with an urgent need will be turned away.

Warrant Officers sought

The US Army Warrant Officer Recruiting Team from Fort Knox, Ky., will brief on warrant officer qualifications and application procedures. To qualify you must be an E-5 or above between the ages of 18 and 46 with a minimum GT score of 110 and have completed PLDC. Register, vote!

Service personnel, civilians and eligible family members who will not return to their home state of residence in time to vote are encouraged to register to vote by absentee ballot in their state primary and general elections. Your unit voting officer is available to assist you.

MCCS offers tours program

Marine Corps Community Services, Henderson Hall, has begun a new full-service tours program and offers one-day and overnight tours to local and worldwide areas, tours to ski, snowboard and tubing sites. Upcoming tours include Atlantic City, Niagara Falls, the Philadelphia Flower Show, cruises and Disney World. All tours include transportation and accommodations.

MCCS Tours is customized to meet the interests of the military and retired military market and is open to all Department of Defense identification card holders. Some tickets are discounted for active duty military personnel.

FAST helps raise GT score

Interested in raising your GT score to change your MOS or attend an NCOES? If so, FAST (Functional Academic Skills Training) is the way to go. FAST provides Soldiers the opportunity to gain the skills needed to raise their GT scores. Instruction is based on deficient subject areas reflected by TABE score results.
