Luke (with the red stripe) dives to start the 50 freestyle. He earned second with the time of 29.24 seconds at the Delaney Athletic Conference meet hosted by Fredericksburg Academy on Jan. 22.
Quantico Middle-High School swimmers tore through the waters at a Delaney Athletic Conference meet hosted by Fredericksburg Academy Jan. 22. The Warriors’ swim team beat one out of four other swim teams when scores are compared head-to-head.
This is the first year on a swim team for many of the Warriors swimmers.
‘‘We just moved to Quantico in September,” said Gunnery Sgt. Kenneth Anderson, aMarine Corps Network Operation Security Center deployed support chief. ‘‘My daughter really enjoys the water, and the coaches have done great job helping her. She’s reallyimproved. I love to come out here and support her when I can.”
‘‘Yeah, I really enjoy my dad coming here to watch me,” said Shai, an eighth-grade Warriors swimmer. ‘‘The coaching has really helped make my technique get better, which has made me swim faster.”
Kathlene Rew, the head coach, works to make sure all her swimmers excel by means of hard work.
‘‘We do weights and cardio, and work on stroke techniques,” Rew said. ‘‘Some of the guys are just naturals, and they pick it upand go. The first-timers have all dropped their time by at least 30 seconds from when theseason started.”
The Quantico swimmers who have beenon the team longer have learned from theirexperiences.
‘‘My stroke technique has improved, I’m making better times and I’m a more experienced racer,” said Kaysie, a 10th-gradeWarriors swimmer.
The veteran swimmers also try to help coach the new guys.
‘‘We take the new swimmers aside and we really break down the stroke for them,” said Kaysie. ‘‘We polish them up.
‘‘They all have improved amazingly,” Kayse said. ‘‘They are very eager to learn and are doing very well at the meets.”
At Fredericksburg, Quantico had several top performers. Luke earned second place in the boys 50-meter freestyle with the time of 29.24 seconds. Luke also earned second place in boys 100 freestyle with 1 minute, 9 seconds. Yuki earned third place in girls 50 freestyle with 1:17. Comain earned third place in boys 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:50.
But for these swimmers it’s more than just earning good scores.
‘‘Ever since I was 3, I’ve loved swimming,” said Anderson. ‘‘I love being part of a team where I can swim and hanging out with my friends here.”
