Relationship enhancement workshops

The Prevention and Relationship Enhancement Program workshops for military couples sessions are scheduled for Feb. 2 and March 1 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Semper Faith Center, which is located at Larson’s Gym. This workshop teaches couples how to:

  • Manage Conflict

  • Solve Problems

  • Communicate Effectively

  • Work as a team and preserve and enhance commitment and friendship

    Northern Virginia Community College

    Northern Virginia Community College’s registration for spring 2008 is now open. Students may take classes at Quantico’s Lifelong Learning Education Center during the two eight-week sessions that begin Monday and March 17.

    Campus and online classes also begin Monday. Students may choose courses in Accounting, Administration of Justice, Arabic, Business, English, History, Information Technology and more.

    New students may apply to the College at www.nvcc.edu. Students may also register online at www.nvcc.edu, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

    Military Academic Skills Program

    The Military Academic Skills Program is designed to improve the competencies in the academic skill of reading, communication⁄writing and mathematics. In turn, Marines will be better prepared to retake the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery test and to perform their mission. Classes are held between 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. For sessions that contain a holiday break, hours may be extended to meet course requirements. This is an on-duty program and command approval is required for enrollment. An ‘‘Administrative Action” form may be obtained from the education office. For more information, call (703) 784-4010.

    University of Maryland University College

    University of Maryland University College registration is now open for spring classes . Choose from the many classes offered online and face-to-face.

    The spring undergraduate dates are:

  • Standard session: Now until May 8

  • Special session: Feb. 7 to May 8

  • Mid-spring session: March 24 to June 28

    Graduate classes are also available:

  • MBA: Now until April 13

  • Standard spring session: Now until May 8

  • Special session: Feb. 27 to May 8

    Hours for the university representative are Monday to Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and advising on Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

    New Parent Support Program

    The New Parent Support Program is sponsoring a ‘‘Cooperative Parenting and Divorce” workshop.

    The four-hour educational workshop is for separating or divorcing military parents and is based on the Cooperative Parenting Curriculum, which is designed to improve the quality of the parental relationships in situations of separation or divorce. Goals of the program are to assist parents in shifting their role from former spouses to co-parents, educate parents regarding the impact of parental conflict on their child’s development, help parents identify their contributions to conflict while increasing impulse control and teach parents anger management, communication and conflict resolution skills, and address children’s issues.

    American Red Cross seeks volunteers

    The American Red Cross is currently seeking volunteers not only for Red Cross opportunities, but for many other programs on Quantico Marine Corps Base as well. Volunteers make up over 90 percent of the American Red Cross. Volunteer positions are available for administration, disaster preparation, health, safety, education, and assisting in special events in the community.     Rosalind Rhymer Preschool openings

    Rosalind Rhymer Preschool still has openings for the 4 year old program. Children must be 4 years old by Sept. 30. For more information, call (703) 640-6446.

    American Red Cross offers classes

    The Quantico American Red Cross office is offering several health and safety classes throughout January and February. Register online at www.pwarc.org or call (703) 368-4511 or (703) 784-3113.

  • Standard First Aid with CPR-Adult, Infant and Child: Cost is $65 for nonmilitary and $52 for military Saturday and Feb. 16 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Little Hall.

  • Adult CPR⁄AED: Cost is $55 for nonmilitary and $44 for military Feb. 14 from 6 to 10 p.m. at Little Hall.

  • Infant and Child CPR: Cost is $55 for nonmilitary and $44 for military Feb. 21 from 6 to 10 p.m. at Little Hall.

  • Standard First Aid: Cost is $45 for nonmilitary and $36 for military Feb. 28 from 6 to 10 p.m. at Little Hall.

  • Babysitter’s Training: Cost is $50 for nonmilitary and $40 for military Feb. 2 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Little Hall.

  • Lay Responder First Aid and CPR⁄AED Instructors Course (Three-Day Course): Cost is $195 for nonmilitary and $156 for military Feb. 5-7 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Little Hall.

    Single Marine, Sailor party

    The Single Marine and Sailor Program is sponsoring a Mardi Gras Party Jan. 31 from 6 to 11 p.m. at The Clubs At Quantico for all single Marines and sailors.

    Black History Event seeks volunteers

    The annual Black History Event at Little Hall is in need of volunteers for the choir and skit. The choir is made of Marines and civilians. There is no need to audition. All are welcomed.

    The event is scheduled for Feb. 21 at 11:30 a.m. in Little Hall’s theater.

    National Guard Bureau Officers’ Wives Club now offering scholarships

    The National Guard Bureau Officers’ Wives Club is accepting applications through March 31 for the 2008 academic and needs-assessed scholarships.

    Children and spouses of military and DOD civilian personnel assigned to or retired from NGB are eligible.

    Base library hours of operation

    Quantico Base Library hours of operation are Monday to Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 7:45 p.m., Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:45 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5:45 p.m., and closed on Sunday.

    Blacks in Government scholarship fundraiser

    The Quantico Chapter of Blacks in Government, B.I.G. at the Crossroads, is sponsoring an ‘‘Evening of Jazz Scholarship Fundraiser” at The Clubs At Quantico Feb. 2 from 7 to 11 p.m.

    All proceeds will go toward providing post-secondary education scholarships to deserving students attending schools in Prince William, Spotsylvania and Stafford counties. Tickets for the event are on sale now.
