Holiday Tour of Homes brings charm and history to the Season

A beautiful three story Victorian home, built in 1904, decked out for the Holiday Tour of Homes.
During the evening of Dec. 11, just in time for the holidays, over 60 base employees, retirees, family and friends enjoyed a tour of homes offering a rare opportunity inside these historic residences.

The walking tour began with visitors checking in at 103 Strauss Ave. (next to building 20) where they were welcomed by wonderful holiday Carols played by the Weaver family. Hot cider, coffee and cookies were offered by Lincoln Military Housing and lithographs and note cards of the historic homes (from the base’s 100th anniversary, drawn by David Williams) were offered for sale.

Decorated beautifully for the holiday, the five historic homes on tour included 113 Strauss Ave. (three story, Victorian, built in 1904), 115 Strauss Ave. (single story, built in 1920), 201 Strauss Ave.(three story, duplex, built in 1913), 5 Tisdale Road (Commanding Officer’s Quarters, built in 1899), and 4 Tisdale Road (two story, built in 1892). In addition to touring the homes, visitors enroute to Tisdale Road were treated to holiday carols sung beautifully by the Bond family.

The Indian Head Division would like to thank the following people for their overwhelming support for this event: Beth Phillips and the Officer’s Wives Club; the Stubits, Phillips, Duerden, Bacon, and Hilliard families for donating their homes for the tour; the Bond and Weaver families for their musical and singing talents, Lt. Cmdr. J.J. Johanson (tour bus driver), Cmdr. Ken Conley (welcome center support), and Lincoln Military Housing who decorated the welcome center (103 Strauss Ave.) and offered cookies, hot coffee and hot chocolate to visitors.

During the Tour of Homes, Cmdr. Alan Phillips (IHDIV XO) graciously guides guests thru his home which was built in 1913.
The holiday tour of homes, sponsored by the Officer’s Wives Club, contributed $900 to the IHDIV’s CFC. Thanks to all the families involved in making this a successful and joyful event. All participants enjoyed the tour, some going down memory lane remembering friends living in the officer’s quarters and visiting on occasions.

In addition to the Holiday Tour of Homes, the following special events were hosted by the IHDIV:

  • On Oct. 19 the command staff participated by washing cars in the Cross Roads parking lot, raising $345.

  • On Nov. 8, IHDIV’s Key Workers participated in a souper luncheon and silent auction at the Mix house, raising $1250. A Special thanks to all who donated items for the silent auction and to all the great cooks that brought in the soups, chili, and gumbo, bread and refreshments.

  • Both the Safety and Energetics Evaluation Departments held bake sales, making over $200 each.

  • The Professional Development Council (PDC) hosted a Meet and Greet Barbeque luncheon on Dec. 6, donating the proceeds of $272.

IHDIV reached its goal for 2007 of $95,000 on Dec. 15. Thanks to everyone for their generosity and participation in this year’s Combined Federal Campaign.
