While at Dahlgren, get ready to be active and be entertained! In addition to the many outdoor recreational opportunities that The Northern Neck area of Virginia provides, you will find plenty to do for the whole family in the area, and at nearby locations. The Morale, Welfare and Recreation Department (‘‘MWR”) at Dahlgren offers a wide range of recreational facilities and activities, from ceramic classes to league bowling, for military members and their dependents, DoD civilians, their dependents, and contractors. Attend major sporting events, concerts and other events in the Washington, D.C. and Metro Richmond areas. Enjoy a game of golf or the latest run movies!

Administration

The MWR Office is located in Building 237, where the MWR Director works, as well as the MWR accounting⁄finance staff and the MWR NAF Personnel Specialist. Applications for employment are accepted here Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Full time, part time and⁄or flexible positions are routinely available.

Sports & Fitness

Gymnasium⁄Fitness Center (540) 653-8580

The gymnasium is located on Dahlgren Road and features a full size gym floor that is used for basketball, volleyball and youth soccer. The facility offers a state-of-the-art fitness center equipped with circuit training, life cycles, elliptical machines, steppers, treadmills, free weights, benches and belts. There are two racquetball courts, an aerobics room and saunas in both the men’s and women’s locker rooms. The gymnasium is open seven days a week. The MWR Sports Coordinator (540-653-7341) and Fitness Director (540-653-2016) also have offices at the gym.

Gear Issue⁄Equipment Rental⁄Vehicle Storage(540) 653-4588

The Outdoor Recreation and Gear Issue office is located behind Rumors, next to the Auto Hobby Shop. Camping equipment, canoes, kayaks, jon boats and other athletic gear are available to rent at the gymnasium. Facility also offers 32 vehicle storage spaces (year-round) for military and DOD personnel. For availability and pricing of storage, contact (540) 653-4588.

Softball

There are two softball fields on base. The primary field (Duke Field) is located directly across the street from the gymnasium. An additional field (Firehouse Field) is located behind the fire station. Use of these fields may be scheduled by contacting the Sports Coordinator at the gymnasium. Co-Ed and Men’s Leagues are run through the MWR sports program in the spring and in the fall.

Soccer

The soccer field on base is located near the main gate and is used for adult and children’s leagues in the spring and the fall. The MWR Sports Coordinator handles this program from the gym. Announcements on all sports leagues are posted in the base newspaper.

Tennis

There are six tennis courts on base. Two courts are located adjacent to building 962, two are on Sampson Road and two are located behind JD’s Training and Conference Center. The courts are for open play on a first come⁄first served basis.

5k Runs

MWR schedules regular 5k fun runs on base with prizes awarded for 1st and 2nd place finishers in both the men’s and women’s divisions. Schedules for all fun runs can be found in The Connector MWR newsletter, and The South Potomac Pilot base newspaper.

Karate

Isshinryu Karate lessons are offered several times per year with classes for both beginner and advanced students. For more information on this program, please contact the staff at the gym.

Aquatics Center⁄Swimming Pool(540) 653-8088

Located on Jenkins Road, the indoor aquatic facility includes a full-size swimming pool plus a separate training pool. The facility is open year round to military, dependents, civilians and guests of the base. Pool passes may be purchased annually, monthly or daily at the center. MWR offers swimming lessons for all levels of expertise and ages as well as aqua aerobics classes. The center hosts local swim meets and an active swim team club for interested youth. The facility is available to rent for private parties and hosts special activities throughout the year. A snack bar, men’s & women’s locker rooms and toddler water play area (open outdoors during warm weather only) are also available at the Aquatic Center.

Golf⁄Willow Oaks Golf Club (540) 663-3002

Willow Oaks is the name of the 9-hole golf course at Dahlgren, located off of Sampson Road. The golf club includes a driving range, pro shop, putting green and snack bar. Regular season runs March - November with league play, group lessons and tournaments. Rental clubs are available for visitors.

Cannonball Lanes (Bowling Lanes)

Located in Bldg. 135, the bowling alley is open seven days a week. This ten-lane bowling alley features all the newest AMF equipment, locker rental, resale bowling items, winter and summer leagues for both youth and adult, a variety of special events and open bowling. Cannonball Lanes is also the home of Mean Gene’s Pizza and Burgers, a multi-choice food service provider. Lanes can be reserved for private parties, and lessons are available upon request.


Entertainment

Information Tickets & Tours (540) 653-8785

The Information, Tickets & Tours office is located in Bldg 144 on Jenkins Road, across from the Housing office building. Hours of operation are Monday - Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. ITT offers discount tickets to attractions such as amusement parks, movie theaters, sightseeing destinations, ski resorts and sporting events. Occasional group outings for various activities are scheduled. Brochures highlighting local tourist destinations and maps of the area are available for customers to pick up as well as information on the Armed Forces Vacation Club and MWR activities on base. Fax service and Notary Public are offered. Newcomers to Dahlgren are encouraged to visit ITT for information on all there is to do in the area.

Liberty Program (540) 653-7277

The Liberty Program provides recreational activities year round for single or unaccompanied active duty military personnel, particularly ages 18-24. These activities may include sporting events and cookouts at the barracks or specially price group outings to recreational facilities or tourist destinations off base. In addition, the Liberty program offers the target population reduced or free admission to many special MWR activities on base such as concerts, comedy shows and theme parties. The Liberty Program office is located in Barracks building 959, room 237, and includes a computer lab with internet access and a movie lounge for viewing 8mm movies.

Movie Theater (540) 653-7336 (movie info. Line)

The Dahlgren Movie Theater is located on Welsh Road and shows movies year-round on Friday evenings, Saturday afternoons and Saturday evenings. Sunday afternoon matinees are shown during the year with the exception of the summer months. Monday matinees are offered during the summer. The theater features recent movie releases and offers a concession stand with nominally priced food and beverages. For updated movie listings, please call the movie line anytime at 653-7336.

Rumors Recreation Center (540) 653-7782

Located across from the Parade Field, Rumors Recreation Center has pool tables, dartboards, a foosball table, multiple televisions, a dance floor and more. D.J. music or other entertainment is scheduled every Friday and Saturday night beginning at 9 p.m. Regular pool tournaments and a winter dart league offer the chance to test one’s skills just for fun. NFL Sunday Ticket is part of the onscreen entertainment at Rumors and live entertainment ranges from a variety of band performances to a comedy show to karaoke competitions.


Craft &Hobby Shop

Craftech Hobby Shop (540) 653-1730

Craftech Hobby Shop is located on Jenkins Road across from the Aquatics Center and offers a variety of craft classes and custom creation options for customers. Classes include but are not limited to, ceramics, framing and matting, stained glass, decorative painting and a variety of creative holiday gift items. Custom creations include full-color printing and laser engraving with your design or ours on coffee mugs, t-shirts, plaques, pen sets, tiles, mouse pads, and more. A full line of team awards and gift items are available also.

Craftech also offers a selection of ceramic, stained glass and framing supplies. Other craft supplies are available as special purchase items. Craftech is open Monday - Friday and the staff is always willing to work with our valued customers.

Auto Skills Center(540) 653-4900

The Auto Skills Center is open Monday - Saturday, and is located directly behind Rumors Recreation Center.

Customers may self-service their vehicles using the center’s tools and equipment. Parts may be special ordered with same or next day delivery. Items carried in stock include oil, oil filters and air filters. Tire mounting and balancing service, oil change and A⁄C recharge are offered by our staff.

Leisure Services

JD’s Training & Conference Center(540) 653-1022⁄7259

Located on Welsh Road near the base movie theater, JD’s offers conference and training facilities to the Dahlgren base community as well as a lounge and ballroom for hospitality services. The Training & Conference Center is available at no fee for official military and civilian training functions.

Cactus Jack’s Lounge (540) 653-1916

Located within JD’s Training and Conference Center, Cactus Jack’s Lounge is open Monday - Friday, 5 p.m. – 10 p.m. Step into a southwestern setting for a bit of social relaxation. Music, large screen TV, a pool table and a dartboard await your arrival. Cactus Jack’s is available for private functions upon request.

Community House (540) 653-7259⁄1022

The Dowell Community House is available to rent through the Recreation Services Office for private parties, receptions, meetings and other functions. With a park and pavilion area, your party may enjoy the outdoors as well. Please call 653-1022 to make a reservation.

The Dahlgren Base Library is located next to the Aquatics Center on Jenkins Road and offers a wide variety of fiction and non-fiction works (hardback, paperback and audio) as well as periodicals, computers with internet access and a children’s learning area.

Child and Youth Programs (CYP)

The Dahlgren Child and Youth Programs (CYP) consist of the Child Development Center, the Child Development Homes, and the Youth Center. The CDP promotes quality developmental programs for children and operates in accordance with the Military Child Care Act of 1989, OPNAVINST 1700.9 Series, and the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).

Child Development Center (540) 653-4994

The Child Development Center (CDC) currently provides the following services: full-time center based and space available drop-in. Full-time center based care is provided from 6 a.m. - 6 p.m. The CDC is accredited by NAEYC, holds DoD certification, and participates in the USDA Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP).

Child Development Homes (540) 653-5823

The Child Development Homes (CDH) currently provide the following services: Full and part-time home based care, space available drop-in care, and limited shift care. The CDH program holds DoD certification and participates in the USDA CACFP.

Youth Activities Center (540) 653-8009

The Youth Activities Center is located on Jenkins Road next to the swimming pool. Open Monday - Friday, 6 a.m. - 6 p.m., the ‘‘YAC” offers a before and after school program during the school year, as well as a summer camp for youth ages 5 to 12. As an affiliate of the Boys and Girls Clubs of America, the Youth Center participates in 8 BGCA core programs. They include Triple Play, a fitness program; Smart Moves, education about peer pressure and social concerns; Keystone Club and Torch Club, organizations that work on making youth civically aware; Power Hour, a homework assistance program; and Fine Arts and Photography programs that allow youth to compete nationally with other BGCA club members. The YAC also hosts youth dances and a variety of special events throughout the year. Young folks at Dahlgren are encouraged to participate in the youth council that meets regularly to discuss upcoming programs and activities.
